I will never forget you Boo!

FOUR YEARS HAVE COME, FOUR YEARS HAVE GONE
LONG MONTHS THEY ALL HAVE PASSED,
SINCE THE DAY YOU GAVE YOUR LIFE FOR US,
THEN CAME THE BREATH YOUR LAST.

WE'VE HAD THE JOY OF KNOWING YOU
BEING BY YOUR SIDE THAT DAY,
WHEN GOD WOULD CALL YOU HOME FROM US,
AND WE WOULD HAVE TO STAY.

THE JOB, THE TEAM, AND LIFE GOES ON
BUT IT IS NOT THE SAME, YOU SEE,
FOR WHAT YOU DID FOR US THAT DAY,
LIVES ON INSIDE OF ME.

THEY SAY THAT TIME CURES MOST THE GRIEF
AND THE PAIN WILL GO AWAY,
BUT THE MEMORIES OF WHAT YOU DID,
ARE ALWAYS HERE TO STAY.

I GUESS FRIENDS, ARE FRIENDS, FOREVER
REGARDLESS OF HOW WE PART.
THE JOY OF KNOWING YOU, MY FRIEND
REMAINS WITHIN MY HEART.

I had the honor of working with Vu at both the Sacramento County Probation Department and the Sheriff's Department. Vu's honesty, integrity and devotion to others was inspirational. He completed a majority of SSD Academy 99SBRA3 with me before he became injured. His dedication to duty was revealed with a miraculous recovery from surgery and his graduation from the very next academy class. Vu, you will always be a class act and a role model for all or your brothers and sisters in law enforcement. You will always be remembered.

Thank you Deputy Nguyen for your ever lasting impression on the county of Sacramento. You have completed your last assignment that has been called upon you with strength and dignity. Rest now and know that your fellow brothers and sisters will continue to fight the fight that have layed your life down for. God has taken you home to be with your fellow brothers, Deputy Mitchell and Officer Russell, as they too have made an everlasting impression on our hearts. May you all rest in peace.

When I heard there was a deputy killed from the Sacramento Sheriff's Department I prayed it was not someone I knew. When I heard the name, I tried to tell myself, "No, it's a mistake...that's a typo." When I saw your picture, my heart sank. When the phone call came, I was in complete shock.

You came to our academy class after a knee injury prevented you from graduating with your initial academy class. You had the option to re-enter the academy in the 13th week but you chose to start all over from the beginning with us...Sacramento Sheriff Basic Recruit Academy 2000-3.

We were lucky to have you. You led our class as a platoon leader and made us laugh with your obsessive-compulsive cleanliness issues. Your high ranks in academics often allowed you to park right up front...lucky you; you sure did miss out on being soaked in the rain while walking from the parking lot to the locker room! You were smart, articulate, witty, driven and humble. You were famous for legendary one-liners, some that caused us to get PDN's because we could not stop laughing in formation.

Physically, you were a powerhouse...a keg of dynamite who could leap walls and drag dummies with ease. You never let one of us fall behind in the group runs, often dropping back from the front of the pack to help those not gifted enough to maintain a 7.5 minute mile pace. You firmly believed, "NEVER leave your brother behind." You were great in everything you did. You helped several of us in defensive tactics perfect our rear wrist lock techniques and never complained of "sweaty palm syndrome."

In December 2000, we honored you as the Most Outstanding Recruit at our graduation. You received a standing ovation from all of us, our families, friends and fellow law enforcement in attendance. You began a proud career with the Sacramento Sheriff's Department...I know you did the best you could...your best was never good...it was always amazing!

All of us in our academy class are forever tied to our academy class motto... Strength...Service...Dedication. We recited that motto every day to remind us of who we were...and most of all what we wanted to embody as future law enforcement officers. Vu, I have no doubt in my mind you still recited that motto everyday you went into work. STRENGTH to remind you to always fight the good fight and never give up...SERVICE to remind us to make this world safer for those unable to protect themselves...DEDICATION to our job, family, the community and most importantly... ourselves.

Vu, you will be greatly missed by your law enforcement family, the Vietnamese community you proudly represented and those who knew you as an "all around great guy." The Sacramento Sheriff's department was a lucky to have had you represent them...You embodied their badge and served with honor and respect. My deepest condolences go out to the Sacramento Sheriff's Department.

To the Nugyen family, please know that you are in the thoughts of thousands of law enforcement officers and their families. May the outpouring of prayer, love and support from your second family lift you from the pain and loss you feel.

Matthew 5:9 "Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God." Vu, you are a hero. It is a true honor to have called you a friend and "brother in blue" may you rest in peace.

Someone killed a policeman today and
A part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids
And spend many long lonely nights,
The beat that he walked was a battlefield too,
Just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yep, somebody killed a policeman today
In your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on the dark city street
And he stands at each rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all
And a part of America died.

VU...

I first met Vu by the name Boo! because a child friend could not pronounce his name.

I did not see Vu often but when I did see him I would always tell him how much I loved him- he was just one of those people with an honest face and the heart the size of Vietnam. He was so beautiful and gentle with my children.

When I first heard of his death I cried like he was my brother because this is one of those people who just do not deserve their life ended at such a young and ripe age. I last saw him at my birthday dinner and he was so full of life and happy to be there.

Vu was truly special- I will never forget him.

I love you Vu!

My Dear Friend Vu
I have known and worked with so many Deputy Sheriff's In my 25 year career. Very few could ever stand up to my high opinion I have of you. We worked together at the Court House and we became friends. I enjoyed working with you, and spending time with you off duty. You were so interesting to talk too. You brought smiles to me and so many others that you had touched. I am so sad to hear of your death. I knew, and even told you that you would go anyplace in the dept. I was so impressed with your ability. It is not right that the best must go out the way you did. But you answered the call. I will never, ever forget you my friend. My heart goes out to your family and I too feel their pain.
You had so much to offer the Dept. and the community.

I've read your reflections and can tell you were a hard worker and great guy. I'm sorry to hear that you are no longer with us. As a police officer, I know you did not think twice when you ran after that guy. You were only doing your job. I wish the outcome was different. I'm praying that your family and your brother/sister officers make it throught this trying time. Please know that you are a hero who served his community well.
