My humblest condolences to the Tulare County Sheriff's Dept. You never get used to losing friends on this job, and to lose someone during this time of year is horrible. God bless the soul of Det Haws as he enters the gates of St Michael, may he watch over all of the friends he left behind. Stay safe.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Your sacrifice will not be in vain, brother. Rest easy knowing we carry on in your name.

When Tomorrow Starts Without Me

When tomorrow starts without me, and I"m not there to see,
If the sun should rise and find your eyes all filled with tears for me,

I wish so much you wouldn't cry the way you did today,
While thinking of the many things we didn't get to say.

I know how much you love me, as much as I love you,
And each time that you think of me, I know you'll miss me to;

But when tomorrow starts without me, please try to understand
That an angel came and called my name, and took me by the hand,

And said my place was ready, in heaven far above,
And that I'd have to leave behind all those I dearly love.

But as I turned to walk away, a tear fell from my eye,
For all life, I'd always thought, I didn't want to die.

I had to much to live for, so much yet to do,
It seemed almost impossible that I was leaving you.

So when tomorrow starts without me, don't think we're far apart,
For every time you think of me, I'm right here, in your heart

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hollowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last

To the Haws family, my family's sympathies and prayers go out to you. I'm the son of a retired officer and the father of a young active officer. I understand the struggle and worry that family members endure each and every minute that our loved ones are on duty, always in great danger. Without meeting him, I know that Detective Haws was the very best this blessed country is capable of producing and that losing him is a travesty that will be difficult to absorb; he gave everything he could offer for all of us. It will be a struggle, but remember the tremendous gain this world experienced from what Kent brought to everyone's lives. God will be with you in this difficult time.

Dear Detective Haws,
I am so saddened to hear about your death. You were only doing your job when an evil man took your life. I thank God for people like you who give your all while serving others. My father was shot & killed when I was a child. I hope you will meet him in Heaven. You are both Heroes. God bless your family, co-workers, wife and especially your children.
