Reflections for Police Officer William Eric Freeman

I wish express my deepest sympathy to the Freeman family and to the men and women of the Huntsville Police Deparment. I never knew Officer Freeman, but still he is part of the family as are you. Officer Freeman joined a long list of men and women the came before us and now guides and protects all of us.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion. Proverbs 28:1

Although I only met Eric for a brief time while teaching his academy class, he stood out to me. He was a quiet man but his demeanor and presence was one of a man in control, having a lot of maturity. We will miss you my brother. May God give your wife and children peace during this time of sorrow. You served with honor and distinction. Will see you soon in God's precinct in heaven.

With a heavy heart I would like to send my condolences to the family and friends of Officer Freeman. I do not know why this had to happen here again. I remember coming back home (Huntsville) shortly after my fiance' was killed thinking "ahhh, I'm home where all is well, but no, it was not." The incident with Golden occurred and it stirred so many emotions of sadness and disbelief. Here we are again, and I have to say at the top of my voice "Why!?"

I am trying to find the words for the family of Officer Freeman. You are going through so much right now, and I for that I am sorry. It is something that changes you forever. I want you to know however, that you will make it through this time, and that there are so many prayers going out for you. I hope these will sustain you in the times you just don't want to feel the pain anymore. We will never understand why this happens. Just please know that you are never alone. You are thought of often. God bless you and the HPD family.

I can't believe you're gone. We were planning to build a woods field this winter to add onto the existing speedball fields you had together already.
I'll never forget when I was still in communications and you were cut loose on your own, Baker changed forever. Suddenly the 'mellower' side of town wasn't quite so mellow, as someone managed to run from you each week. If only they knew who they were running from! I loved to have you on a call with me when I hit the streets because I knew if they took off, they were as good as caught. When I was brand new, we chased that fat guy (on 10 year old misdemeanor warrants) along the tracks on St. Clair and I fell down, tore my pants, lost a magazine, lost my radio and then almost got run over by a minivan. I felt like such a stupid rookie but thankfully you were there with me and we got him good.
You also were a hell of a drug hound. Remember the guy on Pulaski Pike with the ounce? haha...you had him talk himself straight into it! Or the guy not long ago who threw the drugs out of the car, you opened your door, scooped them up and bluelighted him all at once? That was great. Again, you proved things could be found and trouble stirred up if you tried hard enough. Your drive inspires us all. It's good to have guys around who remind you how great this job can be.
You welcomed me around, along with my family, and I'll always appreciate that. My mother came down to visit and when she rode with me and we ate with you at Zaxby's, you guys hit it off so well, I felt like the outsider there! My stepdad came along to the paintball field during the visit and I was afraid he would feel out of place with you and your brothers, but you took to him, gave him a beer and didn't want to charge him for anything. He had such a good time. I remember gunning for you during the team games because you would beat me one on one every time nearly, although I'd never admit it. When I brought Charlotte to your house, I was afraid she wouldn't let me go off and play, but again, your family showed how great it is and she had a fantastic time with all of you. You kept telling me how cute she was, then played guitar for her as she danced up a storm. I've always appreciated that, and thinking of you two together makes me smile.
I'm so sorry. I'll do whatever I can for Les and the kids, we all will. I promise they'll get taken care of, you don't have to worry about that. I'm sorry and I miss you.

I am Eric's uncle and brother to the grandfather of the children; I served almost 20 years with HPD. I know it is a different enviornment that our officers serve in today than we I worked. The thoughts and prayers of our family go out to Eric children and family. We stand in awe of how quickly a life can change, but we take comfort in the grace and peace of our Savior, Jesus Christ. God's Word tells us this: no greater love has any man than that he would lay down his life for his friends. That's what Eric and thousands of officers all over this land do everyday. God bless and protect you all.
