Friend, I was not sure I would be able to handle this again without quitting. Then I thought of your words to me during our long talks while working at the hospital "Chris, man I just can't get wanting to be a cop out of my head, it is what I want to do and I can't shake it. I am going to have to at least try it or I will never be happy". This said several months after you told me you wanted to be a cop but "I can't take the pay cut". Your spirit and testimony keeps me pressing on and I thank you for helping me through. You are a true hero. God bless your family.

As a fellow south precinct officer, it is ashamed I never had the opportunity to meet Eric, but have heard so many positive statements on his behalf. I truly believe our job is a higher calling and is ordained by God Almighty himself. You will truly be missed by all and my prayers and thoughts are with your family.

Eric,
As a citizen of Huntsville I wish to say thank you for your sacrifice and bless your family in their time of sorrow. Thank you also to your fellow officers in protecting me and my family.

As a fellow co-worker, you will be sorely missed. I didn't know you as well as some in the dept. but something in me says you wouldn't have minded to be called PIG(Pride-Integrity-Guts). When you accept your badge for Heaven's Force tell Officer Wayne Scott (Phoenix PD) and Patrolman Skip Fink (AZ DPS) hello and I haven't forgotten them.

Children, I did not know your Daddy, but I have heard wonderful things about him, he was a good man. The one thing I have heard the most is how much he loved you. I know this must make you feel so good. Hold on to this!!Wrap his love around you when you are missing him. Don't ever forget that it is okay to cry, tears are good. Be there for each other, be there for your mom. You will make it through this because you all have each other. You are in my prayers.

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

All my thoughts and prayers are with Leslie, the wonderful children, family and friends that blessed his life and made him the man he was. May God ease your pain and know that your husband and father was doing an honorable thing when he was taken. We will never know your sacrifice but know that we are all better for knowing him. I am the sister of an HPD officer. It seems as those these times are hard for our community and especially for Freeman's family. My thought's and prayers go out to his children, wife, family, friends, the docotr's and nurse's who treated William and also to all of the boys in blue.
May GOD watch over you all and help through this tragic time. Remember all the good time's you had w/ Freeman and Golden.

RIP to both officers.
