Reflections for Police Officer Madeline Carlo
Maddy was my first real partner on patrol in Housing. We became very close as the years passed by. She was no longer a partner but a sister, we shared our problems and solved them together. Maddy was like the older sister i never had and always wanted, till i was finally blessed by her. When we all lost Maddy it was a great person and brave person with the highest level of compassion that was taken from all of us.It has taken me this long to post anything about my dear friend because it has been hard to accept the fact that she is gone, but even on her death bed she worried about everyone else. That was Maddy....She is greatly missed there are times when i need to talk and i reach for the phone to give her call only to realize the harsh reality. But now i look up to the heavens and speak to my dear friend which i love, respect and miss so much

It's so sad that I had to hear about Maddy's death from others. I guess that's what happens after you retire. I first met Maddy when I worked at FTS. She put on such a tough act. Deep down, she was such a softy. She had a heart of gold. When I would see her at 1 Police Plaza, I would always ask for a hug. Then, I would ask her out! She would always laugh it off.
If there is a Heaven, & I hope there is. I know for sure that Maddy is there. Hey Maddy, you are one of the classiest young ladies I've ever met. I'll never EVER forget you! The world is such an empty place without you. God bless you Maddy. xo Sully

Bobbie, Juliette, and your Godson li'l Julio and I just want to thank everyone who has expressed their reflections of you.
We miss you so much girl, every second of every day and we miss talking to you.
Sorry it has taken me so long to post a reflection but it has been so difficult not having you here with us, but I'm sure you can read our hearts and know that very deep hole you left.
You were always so special, always cheerful and honest and such a dear person to be around and we truly miss you.
NYPD has lost such an inspiration and New York has lost a true citizen and servant.
We will see one another soon and I only hope you and Pa are great, and we miss you guys so very much.
Ma is doing fine and your brothers and sisters are doing everything to keep her well so don't worry.
We keep you in our hearts and minds always baby, so just rest, you deserve it.
I remain your proud brother always, and Bobbie, Juliette and li'l Julio send our love.
Thanks for everything you did for us.

This May 9, we leave for the Police Unity Tour from New Jersey to Washington DC for Police Week. The Unity Tour is a 350+ bicycle ride that officers ride in to honor the fallen officers. This year I will be going and honoring Officer Carlo. I would love to be able to meet and see her family and friends in Washington DC and present them with a gift in her honor. The motto of the tour is "we ride for those that died". Over 1000 officers from all over the country will be riding. Officer Carlo deserves to be recognized for the work and dedication that she gave that continued through the years and during the hardest time in New York's history. Thank you for your service and dedication Officer Carlo, your family and friends are in our thoughts and prayers!!

When I think back to the day I met Maddy(through Ana Ramirez PSA 8) it seems like we had been friends for years! It was such a ray of sunshine just to hear a kind word that she would always give or a great word of advice. She fit into my circle of friends as if we had been friends for years. When Maddy called it was going to be a conversation on one of many of Ana and I best friend feuds and how we needed to make a mends. I will always remember all the great advice she gave on friendship and relationships. The couple of times I got to see her at the hospital I never got a chance to say Thank you. It breaks my heart to know that I couldn't be there(minor surgery) by her side like I wanted to and be there for Ana and the Carlo Family. I prayed constantly asking God to remove the cancer but God only takes the good and God was missing one of his Angels. I know she's up in heaven looking down on us and protecting us! Maddy, Thank you so much for being Ana's great friend and all that you've done for me and keeping our friendship together. I hope to follow in your footsteps and be just as good of a friend as you were. I miss you girl! Hang in there Carlo Family...Love Kimmy

Maddy, you taught me patience, when I was hot you calmed me down. You always listened to me. You are one of the greatest cops and one of the greatest friends I have ever known. Thank you for being their for me always, on a job or in my personal life ( I think of you most with the latter), You picked me up at some of the lowest points in my life. I think of you often and miss you so much. Rest in peace Maddy. Love you.

When 9/11 struck the world, I was a rookie. I listened to the radio reports of those killed at the time. It was the first day that I understood what it meant to be a part of the brotherhood that is Policing.
It saddens me deeply to hear that we are still losing brave heros from that tragic day.
Prayers and thoughts sent for Officer CARLO, family, friends and colleagues of all those that suffered from that terrible day.

I share the feeling of many who visit this site. It is very sad that the events of 9/11 continue to take a toll on our profession. Officer Carlo, I have worked with several NYPD officers with your Hostage Team and other assignments and share their collective pain. I have no idea if I ever met you, but I want to thank-you for your service. Now, take your well deserved hero's rest.
Thank-you.

I knew Maddy thru my beloved wife and partner for life Ana who became good friends with Maddy during their Housing P.S.A.#7 years and even when they both moved on to other commands they still kept in close contact with each other their freindship grew like family always calling each other sharing troubles, problems and concerns especially on Mother's day when they made it a point to call each other every year, the one year that a call did not come from Maddy I remember my wife saying that's weird it's not like Maddy not to call something must be wrong. Ana called to find out Maddy was in the hospital and was there for a fews days we immediately dropped what we were doing and went to the hospital where we found out about her condition and that's where Ana stood from that point on by her side. During her 9 1/2 week hospital stay we both got to know the Whole Carlo Family and what they were all about - TRUE LOVE AND TOGETHERNESS - They took us in and regaurded us as Family. Together we got all of Maddy's wishes and worries out of the way making her departure as comfortable and easy as possible although we could not take her pain away or make her stronger we made It a point to be there and try anchoring and keeping everyone from breaking down. when the time came Maddy knew all was in good hands and as peaceful as she was to us is how she left. She brought our two families together for a reason and that's where we shall remain know to our word we both shall be there for the Carlo Family if you need us. Our love and togetherness will live in her memory. Love You Maddy Rest In Peace....Sis - Fausto - P.O. RAMIREZ PSA#6 HOUSING

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the officer they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Carlo. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.
From reading the reflections left for Madeline, she sounds like she was a great woman with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew her in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Madeline's life and the WOMAN that she was. Remember that Madeline's life was about so much more than the way she died. Madeline will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.
Officer Carlo, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.
Wishing you brighter and better days,
Jocelyne :)
