Reflections for Detective John T. Young

Hi John,

I know you see it all but I wanted you to know that your granddaughter Peyton is beautiful. While I think she looks like a Muldoon, she reminds me so much of Johnny = who totally resembled you. Your soft spot for the little girls was seen through my Fiona but I have to tell you that Peyton would steal your heart...and you know it.

Another holiday season has past and you are remembered and thought about always. We speak of you and (make fun too) haha...you are so terribly missed.

I know you are looking from heaven and guiding your Peyton and caring for your family.

We miss you John...Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Keep the watch over us...we feel you and think of you often! Love - Everyone

Hi Johnny it has taken me a long time to write this letter to you, for that I am sorry. I have missed and thought about you every day. I still cant get it through my thick skull you are no longer here with us, but I know for a fact you are still in our hearts and mind. I look at your picture and that smile still makes me laugh, at least your not making a funny face like you did as a kid. Johnny, I miss you so much and I dont know what to say accept thank you for being my big brother and always being there for me no matter what. I often tell people about you and your family, how all the kids always gave you a kiss before bed. You are a great father and friend to many and I for will never forget all the things you have helped my through. Thank You for just being you. I LOVE YOU

Hi John;
I can't believe how much time has past. I still feel this is all a bad dream. I get reality checks when I come to visit you.....still waiting for you to open that beer.....We all miss you very much....all your kids are grown and matured into fantastic people, you would be very proud.....I know you know that......You give me alot of inspiration.....I enjoy our talks.....we may not solve the problems of the world...but I leave feeling better and stronger about my mission in this world..Maura is a strong woman who is doing a wonderful job for the kids...I know each day is hard for her........but she is surrounded by a strong loving family....
I will always come to visit, a brothers bond is ever so tight....I never wanted to let go of my little brothers hand that last final night, but God needed a shortstop and must have had a bigger better plan for you....
Rest comfortably my brother and friend....one day we will be re-united again...
all my Love

"It is not how they died but it is how they lived" are the words that have been inscribed at the National Police Memorial in Washington D.C.. As part of the Police Unity Tour, I have been given the honor of riding for Detective John T. Young. During the 300+ mile bike ride from New Jersey to Washington D.C., I will wear the blue bracelet that remembers and honors Detective John T. Young for his life and his sacrafice, but the greatest gift I carry on the trip is in my heart that bears the thoughts and prayers for Detective Young and his family and the ability to show the nation that "We will never forget".

John,
It's hard to believe, even a year later, that you're gone. Just today, I told someone your story. The story of how even now, we are still losing people to 9/11. The story of how even when there was not much hope, you were still determined to bring the lost home to their families. You truly gave the ultimate sacrifice. We miss you terribly - give my love to mom & dad. Know that your family is loved and cared for. Love, Joan

John,

It's just been a year since your passing. Seems like yesterday but seems like forever ago because you are missed so dearly. I remember one of the last times we spent together and you were here with Maura and holding the babies...I remember you cradling Fiona and Matthew in your arms. I remember how Aidan would just sit and cuddle up with you. For those of us who knew you well - we knew you had that soft spot.

It's so difficult to see my sister without you but please know that we are doing all we can to make sure she will be ok.

Your family always knew you were a hero but now you have made the ultimate sacrifice. May you rest in peace, we really miss you....I hope you have found the comfort of mom and now you and dad can rehash all your old "cop stories".....

With love and admiration....

"The Badge"

He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.

He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.

Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.

He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.

His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.

He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.

And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.

But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.

Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.

Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.

So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.

In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.

Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Its good to see someone recognizes that this brave officers death was a result of 9/11. Its a shame the city doesn't realize it. God bless his soul.
