Marshal Hill,
On today, the 130th anniversary of your death I would just like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice-not just for your Community but for our Country as well when you served in the U.S. Army. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

John Thomas Hill is my great-grandfather. Originally from Kentucky, his father's family moved to Denton, TX in 1872. They then became a founding family of Callahan County. He served 4 years in the US Army (1876-1880) doing topographical surveys in the western states.

His oldest daughter, Ada Laurina (Kitty) Hill (b. 1880) lived with her mother in Idaho and was six years old when he was killed. While he had no descendants through his daughter Belle or his infant son Terry, Ada had ten children and fourteen grandchildren. One of her sons, my father, and two grandsons were/are law enforcement officers in Oregon where she raised her family.

Marshal Hill's law enforcement career was not without controversy. I still look forward to seeing him one day and listening to his stories of being a lawman in the old west.
