Reflections for Special Agent Thomas A. Crowell
Tom,
Only 2 years prior, we were paired up on a mission to the middle east. In a twist of fate, I was back on that mission & not too far away when I learned of the attack on you & your detachment in real time. You were one of the best agents with whom I had the privilege to serve. I know you set the best example possible for the agents under your watch & care, just as it was no surprise you were taking the lead at that horrific moment of that ill-fated mission.
Your undying optimism and uncanny sense of humor is something I can only hope to achieve. With every effort, I hope to share your unique personality with everyone else so they may know a part of you through me.
I'm sure at this point you'd send me a pic of a bunny with a pancake on its head saying you "don't know what I'm talking about, but here's a bunny with a pancake on its head." Rest in peace, friend.

SA Crowell,
I spent time with new AFOSI agents in training at FLETC the other day. I noticed your picture on the wall -- they created a beautiful memorial for you and your brothers. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Tom,
I have been away from OSI for 4 years and yesterday I was thinking about those 11 weeks at Andrews with you, James, Heather, and everyone else in our training Det and decided to check the OSI web site to see if anyone had broke a big case, unfortunately I found that you had passed away. My heart goes out to your family and for the service you gave this wonderful country. You made a difference and will be sadly missed.

We all know the very real danger we face when we go to fight for not only our nation’s freedom, but the freedom of those who cannot fight for themselves. Freedom is NOT free and only those who serve or have served (including their families) understand the true cost. We pay for it with our own freedom and you and others like you offered up the ultimate sacrifice. You are a warrior and a hero. You defended those who defend America and it’s way of life. There is no higher calling, nor service to our country. We will move on, we will do right by you and your sacrifice, we will not forget you. Rest in peace brother. May God grant your family solace from their grief. Watch over us as we continue the fight.
