Officer Cassidy, I just finished reading an article submitted to the Phila Inq by your beloved wife. My wife called me while I was on the street today and told me she just needed to hear my voice. I later found out she had read the article too. You and I would have had a lot in common and it scared her. I am heart broken for you and your family. You are all in my prayers. You left a strong and wonderfull family and did your duty well. RIP brother we've got the watch from here.

St. Michael's sword darts through the air
and touches the aureole on his hair
As he sees them stand saluting there,
His stalwart sons:
And Patrick, Brigid, Columkill
Rejoice that in veins of warriors still
The Gael's blood runs.
And up to Heaven's doorway floats,
From the wood called Rouge Bouquet,
A delicate cloud of bugle notes
That softly say:
"Farewell!
Farewell!
Comrades true, born anew, peace to you!
Your souls shall be where the heroes are
And your memory shine like the morning-star.
Brave and dear,
Shield us here.
Farewell!"

Hello Officer Cassidy,

You passed away on my 30th birthday. So this year as I blew out my candles to celebrate my 31st I said a little prayer for your family and fellow officers you left behind...and I'll keep that little tradition up.

Thank you for protecting my city. God rest. See you in heaven, sir.

I worked in the 39th district from 1990-1998.One night while working 4x12 myself and several officers were having a problem with a crowd. It was just after the early end last out had broken roll call.A call for a assist went out and cops came from everywhere,But what I remember most was chuck cassidy a guy I saw in passing in the district from time to time.but that night I saw him in a much different light that night. what I saw was a soldier a soldier a soldier.from that point on I've tried to pattern myself after the chuck cassidy I discoverd that night. A SOLDIER!

I've been living in New Jersey since July '70 but still watch the Philly news. I recall the day officer Cassidy was shot and seeing this very picture of him on TV. Tragically, he died the next day. He looked vaguely familiar to me but I really didn't know who he was then.

Earlier this week I got my "Cardinal Connection" newsletter from Dougherty, and on the cover was officer Cassidy's picture & remembrance. I didn't know he was a Dougherty grad from my year, class of '70.

I began to get a creepy, sinking feeling that I actually knew this officer. I'm still in possession of all four of my Dougherty yearbooks, so I pulled out the '70 yearbook and there he was: Charles E. Cassidy, 5927 Leithgow St, St. Helena's parish.

My jaw dropped; Chuck & I had been football team mates for the 2 years that I played in '66 & '67! Our head coach was Gene O'Pella. The Catholic League was very, very tough back in those days . . . just ask anyone who played for coach O'Pella!

I remember Chuck as being tall & lanky, although I guess most of us were lankier back then. Chuck went on to play all 4 years on the football team, including the championship '68 team. (I decided not to play after '67 because of vision problems I was having.)

I recall that Chuck was a fine physical specimen and a good football player. All of us on the football team were taught by the same coaches, who taught us determination as well as football smarts. They helped mold us into the people we've become, people of faith & character.

I didn't know Chuck in his adult life, but I'm certain he brought good character & determination into everything he did.

I'm shocked, hurt & stunned that Chuck's life was so senselessly cut short by an animal of the streets.

Our family wishes that it were not so and we offer our most heartfelt, prayerful condolences to his family and friends.

Farewell and god bless, my old football buddy!

Thinking of you on National Peace Officers Day.

We saw your family at a Wings game this year, they dropped the first ball. It was really nice that the Wings had them there and that the fans gave them a standing ovation in your honor.

Officer Cassidy,
I just arrived here in DC after riding in the Police Unity Tour in your honor. I hope to see your family here tomorrow and hand them the bracelet I rode in with.
Take care Brother.
