Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Jason Edward Mooney

I am the fiance of Deputy Jason Mooney. I would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. For all those who have sent their support to me and to the Mooney Family I say that I am forever greatful. This is a very difficult time and without the support from the community it would be even more difficult. Thank you for all your prayers and please know that my prayers are with all who serve the community, near and far, and your families.

Thank you! Catherine Harris

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

We are the family of Jason Mooney. I wanted to find a way to thank all the friends and fellow deputies, police officers, marines and fireman for all their thoughts, prayers and support during this time of great loss. We had Jason for 24 short years but in those 24 years he lived a lifetime. He belonged to the community in which he served right up to the time of his death. Thank you all for all your support you will be remembered in our thoughts and prayers forever. Ed, Mary, Josh and Molly Mooney

Jason Mooney was my cousin and one of my best friends. When he and I would talk he would say he would do this and he would do that just to save someones life. and in my head I was like sure anyone would say that. but Jason was right and he would do absolutley anything to save someones life and he did. To me he is one of the biggest Heros around and he is definatly my Hero. He was a great man and fun to be around. Jason Mooney did it all. and I believe thats the way he would want it done. RIP Jason Love you

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Deputy Mooney, especially to his fiancee. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Jason, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Jason's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Jason's life was about so much more than the way he died. Jason will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Deputy Mooney, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Jason,

Although I never met you, I knew many who did. It is always sad to hear about someone who gave so much of themself to others and their community lost their life. You are truly a hero and will be forever in our hearts. I can not find the right words to express my gratitude at all that you gave. Jason, you are a true inspiration. Rest in Peace.

Well Jason, I thought I already posted a comment on here for you...guess im just not patient enough to see if it pops up, besides, I figure you won't mind getting more than one.

I don't really know where to begin. Even though I didn't grow up with you around and didn't really get to finish those big plans we made, such as the big surf trip to Australia we always talked about, I still feel as I have never before. I have so many questions for you, it tears me apart. Just to know that you gave yourself so young and being the type of person that I could never imagine this happening too, makes me constantly ask why. I drive myself crazy wanting to know what you would say right now or what you would want us to take care of if you only knew that you time on earth was limited. I am sure that there is something that you need taken care of or something that you want to say. I just wonder what it is...

I think about how happy you were with life and Cat and all of your friends and can't help but to wonder why, ya know?

I wonder what I am going to do from now on when I want to go to the beach for the weekend, or go for a bike ride, or even grab a drink. I can't really think of anyone else that I can rely on for the laughs and conversation that we had and I know that the beach will never be the same... Especially those 30 some blocks we walked to get to your favorite bar only to find it closed...my god I thought we were never going to get there and when we did, i was ready for a nap! I look on my back porch and can still see you sitting in the chair drinking a corona, sending out picture messages to everyone and laughing out loud.

I spent the first day in court yesterday without being able to give you a buzz and tell you about it. Needless to say it was extremely painful. I tried calling your voicemail, even though your cell is off, but even that is full and won’t take messages lol. Just the same, it will take a long time to get used to not getting those phone calls following your court dates and the outcomes of your cases. I am really going to miss those random phone calls, all hours of the night, and needing opinions on charging someone or code sections and the fact that every time I was on the phone with ya, there was always someone that needed to be stopped and given a ticket.

Well i could go on all day, but I will leave well enough alone. I know you remember the good times as well and some day hope to have some more! Watch over Cat, your family and friends, and I pray that you watch over me while I try to continue on in the job that you loved so much and gave us so much to talk about.

Oh, and I gave up my new car to go the academy, so now you can rest easy, your cruiser is just as good as my p.o.s lol.

So rimshot, rest in peace and take it easy. Just remember you have part of all of us with you and we will always be thinking of ya!

Jason,

So many things that have been unaswerd and so many things i want to know. I always went to you for help either on personal life or for fire. Jason was a guy that was unselfish and always wanting to help people. He was and will ever be one of the best people i have evered known. Jason was always there for everybody, he could make your day a great one even if things have been going wrong. Everybody could learn from him. At 24 he did alot and help alot of people and if there were more people like him this world would be a better place. I was telling my sister a few days ago that he is up there watching over us all, and that he is with our other fallen brothers and sisters and that they welcomed him with open arms. Then a day later one of my best friends told me the same thing. Jason you are a Hero and a brother to me and will always be. Jason was a Cop, Marine, Verteran of teh Iraq war, and one HELL of a firefighter, i learned so much from him and will pass what he tought me down to future firefighters who are willing to do what jason did for all of us. At his funeral one of the Staffords deputys said this "rest now brother, you earned your stripes" That hit hard and so did the last call. I could write alday long about Jason and the times we had but that would take me a life time. Jason i know you are wtaching us everyday and i hope that one day when my time has come that you will open up the gates for and i will jooin you and every other fallen brother and sister in heaven. I miss you my brother and truly love you. So Jason Rest now brother, you earned it.

Hey Brother Mooney you remember the time in summer of 06 there was a call for apartment fire in the new apartments off courthouse road, where Foster, Pat, and I were on the ladder truck. There was you and your partner going from floor to floor banging on doors making sure no one was home at the time of fire. Brother you will be miss big time.
