Reflections for Officer Scott Eric Bell

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Bell, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Eric, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Eric's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Eric's life was about so much more than the way he died. Eric will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Bell, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I was just looking over the ODMP and visited your memorial when I saw your death was contributed to a drunk driver. My dept is proactive enough to have established a fulltime DUI unit.DUI seems to be the crime that gets the least attention until someone dies. There is 'talk' of stiffening DUI sentencing guidelines here in Alabama but right now that is all it is.It's so odd how a drug trafficker can receive such stiff punishment and a DUI offender is forgotten about. It might be because of the many social drinkers on a given weekend are politicians , politicians family , and even as sad as it is other law enforcement themselves. When their caught it's swept under the rug or evidence for court comes up mysteriously missing.

I grieve not only for your family but the senseless way in which you died. I pray your family has the strength to be outspoken against DUI. Rest in Peace.

Scott,
I met you when I was the recruiter and not too many days went by without you calling me to ask when you were going to be hired. You made sure that I knew exactly who you were. Because of your persistence, you became "One of Jacksonville Finest".

Remember the day we were talking at the gate station and I backed my police car into that limo. I was so embarrassed and you knew exactly what to say when I broke down and cried. Thats just how you were. I will never forget you Scott. You are truly one in a million.

I will miss you,

Scott,
Unfortunatly I did not get the pleasure of meeting you. Judging from what other officers tell me about you, I really missed out on meeting a great person. You will be greatly missed but never forgotten. Rest in peace brother. May God Bless You and your family.

I was hired with Scott in December 1999 and we received our first assignment together (Zone 2 midnights). Besides being a hard worker, Scott was a very kind person.

Scott, you may be gone, but you surely are not forgotten. I will see you again my brother. Rest in peace.

I AM A WARRIOR
by Jon F. Hooper

I fight not for glory or fame,
For they are momentary.
I fight for those who can't.
I fight for Justice.
I fight for the oppressed and the down trodden.
And if I should lose my life for these just causes, then I have no regrets,
For I serve to protect the innocent.
It matters not where or when,
For evil knows no boundaries.
Be it fire, flood, or the threat of tyranny,
I will not flee.
Justice is my weapon.
Faith is my shield.
Hope is my armor.
Cry not at my passing,
For it was my Honor to fight for you.
Shed not tears of sorrow,
But tears of joy,
For now,
I stand with God.

Scott,
I'm still in shock at what happened to you. I think we all are. It seems like yesterday that we were handling calls in Mayport together, just like old times. I still remember swapping beats with you when you started on my squad on the midnight shift. You realized quickly that I was there to help you. Anytime you had a question, I was always ready with an answer. I know it's only been a few years since then, but now it seems like a lifetime ago. Don't worry about Whitney. She is and will always be a part of our family, just like you. You did a good job while you were here. Now it's time to rest, brother. We have the watch now, and we will take the calls. I'll never forget you, buddy.

Althoug you can't see me,I'm still here.
althoug you can't hear me,you can't wipe the tears from my face,you can't bandage my hurts;
Althoug you can't cover my up when I'm cold.
Althoug I'm not here in the flesh.......
I'm that gentle breeze that brushes up againts your cheek, giving you a kiss, and letting you know that I love you. When you smile for no reason, just remember that it's me letting you know Iam still here.

My deepest sympathy to the family, friends, and co-workers of Officer Bell. Life may end but memories last forever.
