Reflections for Sergeant Gary Wayne Henderson

Gary Wayne, you will be missed more than you could ever know. What I would do just to hear you yell Gena Lynne down the hall once more. You taught everyone so much. Out of your death, ironically, so many relationships have been mended and so many good things have followed. As hard as it will be for me to return to work, I know that is the way you would have wanted it. There is nothing I would rather do than to see you smiling down on us. Love always, your niece, Gena Lynne

Gary, just wanted to say thanks for all the fun times, the funny conversations, the laughs, and your jokes. You always had something funny to say. My favorite was when you came on station, you would hold your back and say “oh, my back, its so sore, I’ve had to carry the weight tonight!” “Bart, are you gonna do anything tonight?” “Shawn, how’s your back, you okay, or do you need to borrow my back brace?”

Sarge, you know you always made us laugh, and we all loved working with you. You brought us a lot of good times, good experience, and always looked after us as if we were one of your own. You always stood up for us, and never let us down. You were always there when we needed something, to talk, or to get advice. We appreciate everything you’ve done, and you’ve helped guide me in a better direction. I’ll always have you with me as I continue the good fight.

You told me how much you loved your job as you neared the end of your career. It was sad to see it end this way, and wish we could have done more! The big guy upstairs, knew he needed a good guy, to come and help protect, all the angels in the sky! We need you here, but they need you there!

Sarge, just promise me, that you’ll keep watch over us fellow officers, keep us safe, and bring us home to our families and loved ones, each and every night! Help us fight the good fight, and may the good guys win!

You would be very proud of your son Kyle, he’s being so strong for you. He’s going to make a fine Officer some day, and you’ve helped lead him that way. God bless you Sarge, you are sadly missed, but will never be forgotten! As I told you each night we left station to go home, “Good Night Sarge!”

Gary - you would have been very proud of your son & wife!
They were great, Kyle made a wonderful speech, even without that speech class you told him he should take. Your Mom & Dad, sisters & all of your family are so proud of you. The City of Shelbyville have really honored you! I'm proud of you Gary. I can still hear your laugh when you made fun of me falling down so many times on that packed snow. Love, Judy

Thank you to everyone for your prayers and support!

Thank you Dad for everything I have, everything that I am, and everything that I ever will be. No words could ever explain what you meant to me and Mom. Don't worry, we are not lost, you taught me everything I ever needed to know, now all that's left is for me to make you proud. I can't express how thankful I am that I had you for my Dad, and that the greatest words anyone could speak to me are that I'm just like you! I'm going to continue to make you proud, and I promise to take care of mom.... You will be missed and never forgotten. I love you!

Gary,
As I plan for our regular Tuesday morning ride tommorrow, I will take you along in my heart. You would be so proud of Kyle, he has inherited your quiet strength. Charlie, Bill and Dallas gave incredible speeches at the service. Rest in Peace old friend, all that needs to be done will be. Thanks for looking out for the younger officers, you message was heard loud and clear. You were the one constant force during the good and the bad the last 20+ years. We have cried and we have laughed , but mostly laughed. It's a shame that we don't really know what we have until it is gone. For all those that read this, never leave mad, never leave anything unfinished and always say that you love them. You will never be gone from our hearts because you will not be forgotten. Till we serve again.

Well Sergeant, You either carry your shield home or you get carried home on it. You had no control over this one. As we burry you today lots of things will go through my mind.

Gary - I will always be grateful to have known you. My faithful friend and colleague.
You have been there for us through thick and thin even when you were hurting. I will never forget your words of wisdom, concern and encouragement or your gentle giant demeanor. You are truly the best man I have ever met. By the way, the other night when we had the big fire and you called in on your night off and offered to come in and help….
I neglected to say Thanks Sarge!

To Gary’s wife, son and parents and family – Thank you for sharing him with us. He loved us all and we loved him. That is why we are going to get through this together.

To all my fellow officers – Never take anyone or anything for granted. We now know just how quickly they can be taken away.

Rest Easy Brother – We got this!

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Sergeant Henderson and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Sergeant Henderson has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family, friends, and colleagues of Sergeant Henderson, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Sergeant Henderson is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

For those who pledge to uphold it, Freedom requires a sacrifice the protected will never know.
