Reflections for Police Officer Jose Lazaro Somohano

We all in law enforcement fear that radio transmission “Officer Down.” It feels like the world is collapsing. On the morning of September 13th, 2007, that radio transmission made it through our county radios and the world collapsed internally in every cop that heard it. It brought so many mixed feelings, ANGUISH, ANXIOUS, COLD SWEATS, FURIOUS. But right after that second, all of us came together and searched for the subject that did this to you and the other 3 officers. I know “NO ONE” in the law enforcement brotherhood rested that day until this person was captured “Dead or Alive.” Now after justice has been served you could rest in peace and so can we. My prayers are for your wife and kids. Your extended law enforcement family loves you and will never forget you! Jose, rest in peace, we will take it from here. Until we all meet again in heaven; God bless you and thank you!

Once again, the South Florida law enforcement community is mourning the death of one of our own. It is with the most heartfelt sympathy that we send our prayers and condolences to the family of Officer Somohano, and to the members of the Miami Dade Police Department. Officer Somohano's selfless dedication and sacrifice for the citizens of Florida, Miami Dade, and every city in the United States should be commended and never forgotten! Our officers need to reflect on this sacrifice and continue to work together to ensure there are no additional officers who will not go home tonight to their wives, families or children. My sincere condolences go out to Mrs. Somohano and her family. May god bless you as you move forward without your “brave hero” at your side. Please look to the law enforcement community for the help and support you will need in the future.

Officer Somohano, Thank you for dedication of service, it saddens me to be writing yet another reflection. You are a hero and your sacrifice will not be forgotten, in due time your children will understand that "daddy is a hero" and be proud. We will continue to serve in your memory. My prayers will be with you and your family; as with your fellow Officers; particularly the 3 other Officers that were injured with you.

Rest in peace now my brother, we'll finish the tour from here. GOD BLESS!

We often wonder why our brothers and sisters are taken from us so early in life. I have come to understand that God has a bigger role for them to play in our lives. They become our Guardian Angels, protecting us until it's our time to join them. My heartfelt condolences to his Family, our extended Family.

When I think back to your first day at MDPD's Training Bureau, I remember you sharing things about yourself: your former job as a Miami-Dade School Board Police Officer, your desire to serve your community as an officer with MDPD, and most importantly, you talked about your family. I could tell from the way you showed off their photos, and spoke of being a husband and father, that your goal was to make them proud. Trust me...I know they are proud of you, just as we all are. You worked hard to make the streets of Miami safer, and the community a better place to live. Watch over us all, as we continue your work.

Another Hero killed by a piece of garbage. I bet the THUG had never done this before, and was a role model!
Thanks Jose, and to all the Agencies involved in taking out the garbage. May your partners who were with you make a full recovery, and continue to be the Warriors they are.
