Reflections for Corporal Abel Marquez

Abel, Scott and Arlie will all be greatly missed. I remember them from years in the ER at MCH in Odessa. My thoughts and prayers are with OPD family and friends in my home town suffering through this tragic loss. Abel served the community in the most honorable way possible and I am thankful for his dedication and service. He will be missed.

Cpl Marquez
Thank you for your service and from heaven watch over the rest us on the job. While on your new beat in heaven say hello to my future son in-law Josh Norris (EOW July 5th 2007). Rest in Peace my brother.

To the family and Odessa Police Department
Remember the time you had with this hero when he was with you. There are few that will take up the call to stand between the weak and a criminal, those that do are men and women of honor and is a true calling from god. The next few days your heart will break a thousand time again, but do not dwell on the day that took your love one, but the days that you heard his laughter, those strange little things that reminds you of him. Those are the days that will help you in this dark time and he will always live on with your family and family of police officers. He will always be near and watching over you, he will be that light wind that touches your cheek when you shed tears, that warm feeling of a embrace when no one is near. Your family will be in my families prayers and will ask to give you the strength to heal, but never forget him. To the Odessa Police Department, you have suffer a great lost, but remember like the rest of you, he was doing a job that he loved. My prayers are with you also and your beat will never feel same without them, but carry on the fight in their name.

"A coward turns away, but a brave man's choice is danger."

While this quote describes all law enforcement, it is particularly appropriate here. These warriors ran to the sounds of battle while others ran away. They are true heroes and I honor them for their lives and their sacrifice.

I know, first hand, that people in a coma can hear us speaking to them. Officer Marquez was in a coma four days. His family can rest assured, he heard you while he was able. He knew you were there. He recognized your voices and the feel of your presence in his room.
My prayers are with you.

A person who always had an infectious smile! Able had a smile that when you saw it you would just light up. Seeing him smiling, gave several who thought it was impossible to smile, he lent them one of his own. He was always very kind, and had a personality that would put people at ease even in the most terrible situations. Able had widsom to share with the young people of this fine city of Odessa, and share it he did. Not all of the time were the younsters of this great city, willing to listen to Able, however he always tried to impart his wisdom to make them a better person.
He was one of Odessa's finest, and he will be greatly missed. Rest in Peace, my friend......... 10-42 Cpl. Able Marquez...... E.O.W. 9/12/2007
