From across the country my prayers and thoughts go out to Sergeant Ron Harrison, his family, friends and co workers.

" JUST A COP "
Did you know a Police Officer died last night?
Just another Cop who gave his life
Another story to fill the news
Another funeral with a sea of blue
We know that he did not want to leave
Now his brothers, sisters & family grieve
They'll lay to rest their brother with tears
A pain that will last for the rest of their years
And others will come to honor this Cop
Who in spite of the risks, would never stop
“To Serve & Protect” were just not words written as art
It was part of his soul, his body, his heart
The real pain that’s felt by those left behind
Comes from the fact many people don’t mind
That this hero was killed fighting for us
“He’s just a cop, it’s his job, why all the fuss?”
He was there when you needed, there when you called
Never asked you for praise or to thank him at all
So he’s just a cop, risking his life
Catches a bullet or gets stuck with a knife
To those who say that it’s just a cop’s life
Did you ever stop to think, did he have a wife?
Or maybe a boy and a little girl too
Waiting for Dad who promised a trip to the Zoo
They watched out the door, with smiles and cheer
Waiting for daddy who soon should be there
But instead of his smile, come three somber cops
As they walk towards the house time suddenly stops
He won’t be coming home to them anymore
Still they stand and stare out the front door
Saying My Dad was a cop…but why did he have to die?
He was kind, he was funny, just a really nice guy
No it wasn’t just a cop who was killed last night
A part of us all died when they shut down his light
When it happens again, we all know that it will
Take a second to think, for a moment be still
If not for that cop, where would we be
Afraid of our shadow, not one of us free
Was the guy who just died special or not?
Yeah he sure was, …Just a Husband, a Father, a Hero, a COP
The funeral line was long,
There's an awful lot of cars,
Folks came out of the restaurants,
They came out of the bars.
The workers at the construction sites
All let their hammers drop.
Someone asked. "What is this all for?"
And they said, "Aw, just a cop."
Some chuckled at the passing cars.
Some shed a silent tear
Some people said, "It's stupid,"
"all these dumb policemen here."
"How come they are not out fighting crime?"
"Or in a doughnut shop?"
Sure is a lot of trouble,
For someone who's just a cop."
They blocked the intersections,
They blocked the interstate.
People yelled and cursed,
"Damn, it's gonna make me late!"
"This is really ridiculous!"
"They're makin' us all stop!"
"It seems they are sure wastin' time,
On someone who's just a cop."
Into the cemetery now,
The slow procession comes,
The woeful Taps are slowly played.
There's loud salutes from guns.
The graveyard workers shake their heads
"This service is a flop."
"There's lots of good words wasted,
On someone who's just a cop"
Yeah, just a cop to most folks.
Did his duty every day.
Trying to protect us,
Till they took his life away.
And when he got to heaven,
St. Peter put him at the top.
An angel asked him,
"Who was that?"
And he said, "Aw, just a cop."
"unknown"
God bless your wife and family.

Sgt. Harrison,
I remember first meeting you as a rookie, you were a Corporal, you gave me advise that I still live by today. You then became my supervisor in the afternoon shift for three years that is when you became my mentor and friend.
This unfortunate incident happened less than three blocks from my apartment, on a night that for some reason, I could not sleep.
Sarg, you will never be forgotten. The ironic thing is the last time we talked we discussed your retirement. I will continue to fight the good fight as you taught me. You have made a difference in the lives of many, the mark of a true hero. REST IN PEACE MY FRIEND WE ALL MISS YOU, “XRAY SIERRA ONE.”

Sergeant Harrison,
I never knew you but I feel your loss. You were my brother, you were someone that felt "to protect and serve" was more than a catchphrase. It was a way of life. Your 20 years of service is awe inspiring. Please rest now, we will continue your legacy all over the United States.
God Bless the Harrison family, may you find peace.
"A Part of America Died"
Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.
The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

I am at a complete loss of words regarding this senseless incident. I don't know anything else to say except I am so sorry about this tragedy for Hillborough County S.O and our LE family. I visited many of my HC S.O. LE brothers in Brandon, Fl this past April and I know they are hurting right now. This is awful. God Bless us all.

Ron, Thank you for your service and the dedicated example you set for others. It is not ironic that the checkpoint that night was planned as part of a training exercise for other agencies to learn - you were passionate about the DUI enforcement and you were a mentor. Many lives were saved by your efforts to keep our roads safe and for that our agency and our community are thankful. We will move forward with heavy hearts, but your memory will live on and we will carry your mission forward from here. God Bless your family and Rest in Peace Friend...
