It has been a long time my friend, but not a day goes by that you are not missed. You will never be forgotten. Every chance I get I tell people about you and how you were outside of being a police officer. You were definitely a gentle giant. I love you my brother. Continue to watch over the Law Enforcement Officers.

To Patrolman B.J. Wilcher and his loved ones:

On this the first anniversary of your tragic death, please know that your memory is honored and revered today.

My heart is with your family members who call you beloved. I am so touched by their loving reflections for you. They are all in my thoughts and prayers today.

B.J., you rescued us, saved our lives and our families. You are one of the rare heroes among us. You were always there for us in the most traumatic moments of our lives. No matter when we called, we just expected that you would come and do whatever it took to help us, and you always met our expectations. Your selflessness and dedication are awe-inspiring.

This world, this country, your community truly are better places because of you. To have lost you is a great tragedy, an irreplaceable, immeasurable loss for society. We are grateful for and to you, and honor you for all you did for us day in and day out whether you received a word of thanks or praise.

Rest in Peace, B.J.

This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the distinquished service B.J. gave to his community and the citizens of Indiana, and for the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on August 12, 2007.

BJ - our Gentle Giant,

It almost a year and still I find myself seeing someone and for a fast moment excited that it's you. It doesn't seem right that you are gone...Time is supposed to heal and it seems this is harder than most to come back from. Your group of friends miss you bro.

We are proud of all you accomplished in the force - knowing that there was no other way you would have rather passed than in the line of duty. We know you were out there to save lives - and who knows what would have happened that night had the man you were after not caught.

Your boys grow strong and your family is amazing. Always holding you close and continuing on in your memory.

Continue to watch over us as you always have...

Missing the Good Times,

Jme

To those of you who are reading this and did not have the pleasure and honor to meet Ben; much less work with him, I am sorry as you missed an opportunity to meet one of the best the law enforcement had to offer. The world is truly a worse in his absence.

Ben was a man of great stature and an even bigger heart. With a drive to accomplish all that he wanted, which was overshadowed only by the love for his family, his fellow Officers and possibly the love of the job.

It's fastly approaching a year since he has left us and all though they say "Time will heal all wounds," it seems some heal faster than others.

Every time I go 10-42 I say a prayer for you. Until we meet again.

"Titles of honour add not to his worth, Who is himself an honour of his titles." John Ford

It was an inspiration and honor to have known a person like you. It's a great loss to law enforcement to lose such a kind, compassionate, and understanding officer. You will be missed, but never forgotten. You have forever burned your memory in all of us who had the honor to meet a man like you. You are an example of the character we should all strive for. Rest easy, my brother, we have the watch now.

Charges dropped against man in crash that killed patrolman

Posted: Jan 8, 2008 02:25 PM EST

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) - A judge has dropped charges against a Gary man who sparked a police chase in which an officer died in a crash between two patrol cars.

Twenty-seven-year-old Bernard Watkins was released from the Lake County Jail on Monday. He faced a number of charges, including carjacking, in the August 12th crash that killed Patrolman Benjamin Wilcher.

Prosecutors said they were unable to prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Two patrol cars crashed while chasing Watkins when one of the officers drove through a stop sign.
