It has been three years since the awful tragedy of your EOW. As a citizen of Broward County, I just wanted to let you know that you are not forgotten, and I pray for those responsible to suffer the ultimate punishment.
May your family continue to be strong, and know this citizen prays for them.

Sgt Reyka I never had the pleasure of working with you, however I work with many who have had the honor to work with you. I have heard so many great stories of how not only were you a great sergeant but also a great friend to many. You are missed and will never be forgotten.

I know that you will always be watching over us.

To the Reyka Family and the entire law enforcement community I wanted to offer my sympathies on your heinous murder. I conduct services each Friday in Pompano at the Courts of Palm-Aire, and I pass the Walgreens drug store where that night you were a true hero. Your department I know is working feverishly day and night to capture these individuals responsible for your slaying. Your death and that of deputy Patrick Behan need to be solved so that we all can rest easier. By the way, another deputy who died in the line of duty but was not mentioned was Michael Sobolowski. He died a few years ago. Rest in peace Sgt. Reyka. My dad was one of NYPDs finest for almost 40 years.

I'll never forget waking up that morning and hearing about what happened to you on the radio. I never met you, but you remind me to stay vigilant when i'm on shift. Thank you for that Sgt. God bless.

At the time of this tragedy, I was a dispatcher for the Sunrise Police Department in Broward County. I happened to be the main channel dispatcher that had the grim responsibility to inform the department that BSO had a deputy down. It was a turning point in my life that I'll forever take with me. It wasn't until after his death that I learned about Sgt. Reyka's life. His family, and indeed his community was blessed by Mr. Reyka. As a rookie cop, myself, I use his memory as an example of how to shape my career. He will not be forgotten by me. A hero in anybody's book. My prayers still go out to his family.

"The Final Inspection"

The Deputy stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now Deputy,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The Deputy squared his shouldersand said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't, because those
of us who carry badges can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes i've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny, That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked alot of overtime,
When the bills just got to steep,

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear,
And sometimes, God forgive me I've
wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place,
Among the people here. They really
never wanted me around except to calm
their fears.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had to much, but if you
don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne,
Where the saints had often trod.
As the Deputy waited quietly for the judgement
of his God.....

Step forward now, Deputy, You've borne your
burdens well. Come walk a beat on Heavens streets,
You've done your time in hell.

Sgt Reyka,

I was on scene that August morning, and I had never felt so many different emotions. You have touched the lives of so many people, including some you may have never met. Your funeral was incredible, Law Enforcement Officers, Corrections Officers, Firefighters, Emt's and Paramedics from all over the country where there.

My heart goes out to your family, they are still in my prayers.

2 years later, no one has forgotten.

Rest in peace sir...

Sarge,
Although we never met formally, we are brothers still the same. I pray that your family is comforted by the tremendous outpouring of support and prayers from their extended Law Enforcement family.

Blessed are the peace makers, for they shall be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9

Rest in peace Sgt. Reyka. Kevin and I hope that you like the song. Your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

One last breath, it draws deep
Why this night and how they’ll weep
Lord knows I’ve done your work
And will you call me home

The time has passed the near
And with honor I shall go
Fear has gripped my soul
The nothing and the now are one

Take this time when sorrow calls
And blue has washed up red
With me I’ll take these memories
And everything you’ve said
One last breath, be not afraid
For I am in the wind, I am in the wind

When shadows fall, we all must rise
Arm to arm and look them square
Tower through the icy lace
The wicked’s time draws near

And so my final words to you
Are carry on with great resolve
For all your steps shall be lighter
As I hold you in my arms

From blacktop paved
To gold engraved
Eternal gaze
Before these gates I stand

The shield I bore
Replaced once more
Of this Earth no more
In His service I am manned

Flash of light
And Heaven’s might
Have bred new life
From the final breath I drew

One last breath and you take me away

I was directing traffic at a church in Boca Raton today when a complete stranger pulled up next to me in the road and handed me a DVD from your last benefit. Though I never had the pleasure of working with you, in some way you guide me on my shifts. Your memory will always live on and your still making a difference in people lives. Semper Fidelis!
