Reflections for Sergeant Christopher Reyka
I was honored and proud to attend the memorial service for Sgt. Reyka this week. With 4 to 5 thousand in attendance, I was only a face in the crowd. But the crowd was full of many brave and dedicated officers who would gladly have taken Sgt. Reyka’s place on that fateful day. I believe we need to recognize the new position of today’s law enforcement officers. We are a first line of defense against the evil that his U.S. Marine son spoke so well about in his eulogy. I wish to convey my heart felt gratitude and sympathy to Sgt. Reyka, his family, Sheriff Jenne and the deputy sheriffs of the Broward County Sheriffs Office. Sgt. Reyka will be missed, but his life shall shine as an example for us all through eternity.

My deepest condolences to your entire family. I cannot express to you my gratitude for your service. My brother had the honor of working with you. He has nothing but the best to say of you. Thank you for putting your life on the line each day to make ours (civilians) safer. Your children reflect all that you have taught them- they are strong, articulate, and compassionate. I know you are looking down on them very proudly. I know your BSO family and the Broward and Palm Beach County communities will take care of your beautiful family.
You will be missed. Our gratitude will never end. Rest in eternal peace and Godspeed.

I just wanted to give my heartfelt condolences to Sergeant Reyka's family, friends and Police Officers everywhere. I am just a citizen but I have a very heavy heart today because of this horrible, senseless killing. I was driving home and saw the many police cars from all over Florida coming back from the funeral, and I just want to say to all of them that I am sorry for their loss, and to thank them for going to work every day to protect us. You are all my heroes.

Our Community Will Never Be the Same
Who would have known you’d meet your fate
Behind Walgreen’s, dark and way past late
During a routine check and a call put in
Somewhere is one to account for the sin
Of taking you at 51; cut short a life so far from done.
Amidst blood and vile is the irony
Of your steadfast commitment to community.
I will never pass the corner without saying a prayer
For you, honorable sergeant who gave your life there
And your family and friends, all who now feel such pain
Knowing each day they’ll never see you again.
Knowing justice and truth and serenity prevail
In the morning when darkness seems to pale
There are stars that still shine in the heart and the mind
It’s the legacy that good men like you leave behind.
Thank you, Sergeant Reyka, for all you did and for all you were to so many of us.
Rest in Peace.

Sgt. Reyka
I never knew you personally, but the simple picture I have been seeing of you describes alot. I decided to read the reflections to try to see what kind of person you were.
I had the honor of meeting your family tuesday, and could see what a great job you have done. Your wife, daughter, and your son, clean cut and standing straight and looking sharp in his Marine Corps uniform. I could easily tell he was proud to be your son.
You made the ultimate sacrifice, you may have saved several lives inside of the building that morning. Like the sheriff has said before "a hero not by choice, but by fate".
My condolences are with your family and friends.
BSO will always remember.
