Chris, it was my honor to personally know and work with you over the past 18 years. Since the merger of Pompano Beach PD with the Broward Sheriff's Office, our meetings have been brief but the respect for your dedication to the job has grown. Although I never had the opportunity to work directly for you, I did get to hear the stories of dedication from the deputies you supervised. You always took the time to help and guide those who needed it and were always someone I had immense respect for.

There is this extraordinary bond between all Pompano Beach Police Officers. When one of us hurts, we all feel the pain.

My family will say a prayer for you and your family every night and know that we are all here for them to help them in any way to recover from this devastating loss.

Rest in Peace brother

A friend who has relocated to South Florida sent up much of the information on this senseless killing of a brother officer. As I read more of it there were so many emotions that came forth. There was anger at the brutal killing of a man just "doing his job", a desire for vengenance upon the brutal killer(s) of this fine man, sorrow for the Sergeant and his family that have been left behind to cope with this loss, hope that someday our society will improve because of the great work performed by Sgt. Reyka and his many colleagues around the country, and lastly some pride in being a member of a profession that includes such brave individuals as Sgt. Reyka. Rest in Peace. Well done, good and faithful servant.

Rest in Peace...

Police Officer
Syracuse Police Dept,NY

August 18, 2007

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in hell"

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers, thank you for your service and dedication to the law enforcement field, its men and women like you that make everyday a better plac to live.

You can always tell a Warrior.
He puts himself in harms way for the sake of others.
He seeks to engage the enemy while others stay back or seek safety.
He is a Spartan who would rather face death than be dishonored.
His code is plain and simple. There is right and wrong. He always chooses right.
You are an example to us all.
You are a leader. I wish I had the Honor to call you friend.
You can rest in peace now Warrior. You served Honorably.

Examples: An elderly man was trying to find a place to sit and observe the Olympic Games, as he went to each section. All the other Greeks laughed as he tried to make his way through. Some ignored him. Upon entering the Spartan section all the Spartans stood and offered the elderly man their seats. Suddenly the entire stadium applauded. All the Greeks knew what was the right thing to do, but the Spartans were the only ones who did it.

Seven virtues
Rectitude - A samurai deals openly and honestly with others and cleaves to the ideals of justice. Moral decisions do not come in shades of gray, only right and wrong.
Courage - A samurai never fears to act, but lives life fully and wonderfully. Respect and caution replace fear.
Benevolence - A samurai takes every opportunity to aid others, and creates opportunities when they do not arise. As a powerful individual, a samurai has a responsibility to use that power to help others.
Respect - A samurai has no reason to be cruel, and no need to prove his strength. Courtesy distinguishes a samurai from an animal, and reveals one’s true strength.
Veracity - A samurai’s conscience is the judge of his honor. The decisions he makes and how he carries them out are a reflection of his true nature.
Honor, Glory - When a samurai has said that he shall perform an action, it is as good as done. He need not make promises; speaking and doing are as if the same.
Loyalty - A samurai feels responsible for his actions and their consequences, and loyal to the people in his care. A samurai’s loyalty to his lord is unquestionable and unquestioning.
Sometimes added to these:

Piety
Wisdom
Care for the aged

The warrior protects and defends because he realizes the value of others. He knows that they are essential to society and, in his gift of service, recognizes and values theirs... take the extra moment in dark parking lots at night to make sure that a woman gets into her car safely before leaving yourself. Daily involvement in acts such as these are as much a part of training as time spent in the dojo, and indeed should be the reason for that time spent training... When faced with a woman or child in a situation in which they are vulnerable, there are two types of men: those who would offer succor and aid, and those who would prey upon them. In modern society, there is another loathsome breed who would totally ignore their plight!

To the Reyka Family:

We are so sorry for your loss. After seeing you at the memorial service, we hope you know your family is an inspiration to so many. Kim, clearly you and Chris had the kind of marriage everybody hopes for -- one built on love, faith and honesty. Your children are are a credit to both of you.

We will always remember Chris' ultimate sacrifice and pray for justice to be served.

Sergeant Reyka,
After 18 years of service a coward decided that your life wasn't that neccessary. How wrong he was, how so very wrong he was. YOU will never be forgotten or foresaken. WHEN this killer IS caught he will face justice and fade away but your memory will remain. God Bless You My Brother and may your family find peace...

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

I live only a few miles from where this horrible incident went down and on my way into work that day, had no idea what I was about to report on. When I got into work I was deeply saddened to learn that another one of Florida's heroes was gunned down by some heartless coward. The loss of every police man or woman is a great one, but for some reason this one has affected me more than others. It made me value even more the heroic job that all of our officers do and the protection they provide us all with everyday. It has also reminded me to not let one day go by without letting my own family know just how much they mean to me, because in one second, it could all change.

Sgt. Reyka, thank you for all that you've done for us. I pray everyday that the person who did this will be caught. Rest in peace, Sir.

To the Reyka family and their friends: Thank you also for making the ultimate sacrifice in standing by your husband/father/friend as he did all that he could to make sure that other people were safe from harm on a daily basis. Most people cannot do the job that he did without amazing support and love from his family and friends.

Sincerest love and peace to you all...

I knew Chris and worked with him. I was telling a Deputy, that did not know him that he was truly the great person the press was saying he was and not some BS they would say for a fallen LEO. The Deputy stopped me and said you are the fourth person who said that.

Thanks Chris for a great family, who gives all of us the strength to continue.
