Reflections for Officer Douglas Scott Russell

On the 1st anniversary of Officer Russell death, we honored his service in our patrol briefing by reading his entry from ODMP. Each day, we honor one fallen officer on the anniversary of their death so as to keep them in our thoughts, and also to remind us of the dangers inherent in our job. Officer Russell is not forgotten.

Scott;
When I heard the news I was devestated, you are a good friend and a fine Officer. When we worked together at CAMP all I heard was how professional you were in doing your job, I also observed your great sense of humor in dealing with your subordinates. Your dedication to the job was one of the main reasons for bringing you to CAMP.
Rest in Peace my Friend and Know that you are not forgotten.

Ofc. Russell, although we have never met I had the distinct pleasure of meeting your wonderful wife and partner Tom from the CHP while I was in DC attending the National Police Week. For a while my friend Ed and I spent time with them trying to get thier minds off this tragedy. I cant begin to tell you what an amazing experience that was. To Lynn and Tommy, I havent stopped thinking about you guys since that night. Another hero gone, new friends forever. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Russell. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Douglas, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Douglas' life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Douglas' life was about so much more than the way he died. Douglas will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Russell, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been almost five years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I miss my uncle every day. I have never felt so much pain in my life until I found out he was killed. And he was coming down to visit me and my family and meet the newest member of our family our dog Kisses. I love him very much and I am glad that he died trying to protect the innocent and my family.

Scott, It is not often that a day goes by that I do not think about you or your wife. The sacrafice you and Lynn made that day will never be forgotten. Our Santa sleigh project will not be the same this year without our usual stop with our gracious hosts. I hope you are at peace and are having the best golf game of your life. Till we meet again my brother....

Russell family,
I did not know Ofcr Russell, but he is still one of ours, no matter what office they work in. God bless each and every one of you, and know that he will be missed.
We come to work each and every day, hoping we get to send every officer home where they belong. And when that circumstance occurs that we don't our hearts hurt just as yours does.

May you find comfort in time, hold the memories close, and know you will always have a angel with wings.

God Bless

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
that wasn't mine to keep
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne
where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
for the judgment of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,
you’ve born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
you’ve done your time in hell"

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers, thank you for your service and dedication to the law enforcement field, its men and women like you that make everyday a better plac to live.

I AM SO PROUD OF WHAT MY LITTLE BROTHER HAS DONE WITH HIS LIFE. IT IS TOO BAD THAT THE CHP WOULD NOT ALLOW ME HIS ONLY BLOOD BROTHER TO ATTEND HIS FUNERAL. IT HURT THE REST OF MY FAMILY TERRIBLY. STILL THE WAY THAT THEY HONORED HIM WAS BEAUTIFUL I HEARD. HE SACRIFICED HIMSELF TO HELP OTHERS. HE IS A TRUE HERO.

My thanks to all who ministered to my beloved son during his tragic hour. My pain at losing my child to this insanity is tempered by the fact that Scott was in love with his job and the people he worked with. When he would tell me he was "working again" I would ask him why don't you take a day or two off, and his reply was "my guys need me". My love, my baby boy was born with the "Right Stuff", and he died showing he had "IT". As a child he was my "rock", always wanting to help his mom. Scott was my helper when I delivered those many wedding cakes. His critical eye focused on how the table looked. He was a perfect host, too, at family and neighborhood parties I hosted. He loved to carry around the serving trays of snacks and drinks. He NEVER told me a lie. I could trust him with my ATM number, my gasoline credit card, and everything. He loved his baby sister and was so proud when she named her first-born son Scott. He is 16 now and served as the pallbearer leading his Uncle to the church. We are having a tough time with this, his sister, nieces the twins and two nephews C.J. and Danny. Close your beautiful brown eyes and "descanse en paz, mi querido hijo" Your "Mami"

Hey Partner,
I miss you terribly. I'll never forget our long talks on graves, chasing speed in the Tahoe, going 10-15 in Folsom when all I wanted was a Starbucks (How do we explain this one?!!? Nothin'like booking in Sac County, ugh!) You're the best and you'll be in my heart forever. I never dreamed I'd lose someone like you. I'll be there for Lynn. That's what partners and friends do. - Ike

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Officer Russell, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest
