You were a hero, more than you will ever know. Go with God brother and you and your family will be in our Prayers. You were taken from this earth at much too young of age, but I am sure that you died doing a job you loved. You will be missed, I am just sorry I never had an opportunity to meet you.

Friday was a horriable day for Arizona, and the Phoenix Police Department. First we lost 4 men in 2 horrific helicopter crashes, and then several hours later, we lose a dedicated officer who was only doing his job, as those pilots were as well. At 23, you have only begun to experience life, like just getting your feet wet. We lost 5 dedicated men who lived to do their job, and why did they lose their lives you may ask? Simply because of NEGLIGENT, SELFISH, LAW BREAKING criminals who had no reguard for human life. Your in my prayers, as those pilots are too.

Upon the markers of their graves
Our heroes etched in names we save
For all the life they gave with pride
To keep the peace within life's stride

To honor serve and do their best
To keep us safe through any quest
They gave up what was theirs to share
Their spirits shall be always near

No fear within the hearts and minds
To keep us safe within our times
The glory that is ours to see
Those special hearts of bravery

They have walked where no man dare
Their lives in danger with no care
For they have given all they could
For their courage we have stood

In awe of every one who gave
His life for others who they saved
So we will know their contribution
Their firm resolve and resolution

For those they left with hearts so broken
In every whispered word that's spoken
We bow our heads in confirmation
In every word life's revelation

Those who stand within their shoes
Will follow courage as they choose
And give to all the best they had
They carry on with spirits glad

We will know that they walked through
With colors bright and hearts so true
No Island stands alone they say
For heroes they are born this way

Protecting those with loyalty
A glimpse of so much royalty
Within the years of courage bound
These officers have earned their crown

Upon the earth we shall remember
The special goals and all their thunder
That proves a hero came our way
Who left their hearts on earth to stay.

Officer Cortez, when we came in to shift briefing last night, my entire shift was told that you were a Detention Officer prior to your service with Phoenix. That shook most of us, to realize that someone we may have worked with at some time in our careers was taken from the world, trying to protect the city we all live in and love. You will always be one of us Officer Cortez. Always. Rest in peace sir.

Ofc. Cortez was too young...how sad to lose yet another Arizona brother. But we take solace in knowing that he will be watching over us at the side of St. Michael.
What a terrible day...watching the chopper crash of our friends in the media, and then losing a valuable member of the Arizona PD family. God bless you all in Phoenix, and the wonderful job you do. Take care of eachother, and use all the resources you are given to deal with these tragedies: Dispatchers, Officers and other PPD staff. Know that SPD is here for you...we all are.
My prayers go out to the wife and young children of Ofc. Cortez, and to his squad and co-workers. He will be missed.
