I am sad for your/our loss. I suppose God has a plan for all of us, but at times like this it is hard to understand why god choose to allow the better man to be killed and not the scum that shot him. I have also lost a family member to gunfire. He is still inspiring others even after his death as I am sure Officer Cortez will do the same. Do not ever let his death go un-noticed, remember him always as a true soldier, a great LEO. I hope justice is done swiftly and without a lot of grief to Officer Cortez's family. We were fortunate that when my Brother-in Law (Deputy Sheriff Gene Gregory of Seminole Cty, FL) was killed in 1998 that his killer was also shot and killed and that spared the family a painful trial and reliving that horrible night. Always remember the Thin Blue Line and pray everyday that all of our peacekeepers come home safe. May God bles each one that was touched by Officer Cortez. Godspeed my good man. R.I.P.

Dear Cortez Family and Phoenix Police Department,
This is so tragic. I heard the story and immediately began to cry. I did not know the officer and his family but for all of us who truly appreciate the police department there is a deep sadness and sense of great loss for George and his family. May God Bless you and help comfort you in your pain.

Georgie is greatly missed by all those who know and love him. Pray for his wife, 2 very young children, mother, father, and grandmother. His family will need a tremendous amount of support during this time and as his children grow up without his daily love and guidance.

May you rest in peace, brother.
As an aspiring recruit, this further puts into perspective the question I always get about "why do you want to do this?" I think Aimee a few posts down said it best: "...for most of us, we didn't choose this job, it chose us."
Thank you for service, you will never be forgotten.

To the family and co-workers of Officer Cortez, my heart goes out to you all. As the mother of the last fallen officer in 2006, Officer Bryan Tuvera SFPD,
EOW 12/23/2006, I know first hand what you all are going through. My son was 28, newly married (only 2 months) and also was shot. He died on the 12 year anniversary of his own father's death, the day before xmas eve. May you gather strength from each other. They all tell you he is a hero, which he truly is. But I will tell you first hand, the emptiness you feel inside unfortunately grows deeper. Always remember the love you all shared. Treasure all his memories and keep them alive in the children. His department and fellow police officers are now your family who will stand by your side for eternity. May god bless you and watch over you in the days ahead. My prayers are with you.

George -
May you rest in peace. Watch over those who watch over our loved ones. Protect them as they protect everyone they can.
Your Uncle said he was proud - as you died a warrior's death. I agree with him. May St. Michael bless you and your family during this difficult time.
Rest In Peace
