Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Chief Deputy Tommy Kent Martin

You served your time and then some. You gave all you possibly could and now it's your turn to rest. Thank you for your service and thank you for paving the way for the rest of us.

"A Part of America Died"

Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your town or mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

Oh my gosh! What a horrible, horrible way to die. Aren't the windows of their vehicles bulletproof? We need to come up with something much safer for our officers so that these criminals who now shoot them in the face, can't kill them. There has to be some way, some how with today's technology. Bulletproof vests just aren't enough for them in today's world anymore.

Come on, let's do something more to help our officers, please!
