Reflections for Chief Deputy Tommy Kent Martin

TK,

I've been reading this site for a few years but I hoped I would never know anyone on here. I knew you for less than two years you but you certainly made a mark on me. You were always the first person to greet me in the morning and ask how my shift went and how my girlfriend was doing. You have been a constant example of how I want to be, both professionally and personally. I have a great deal of respect for you and you really have been a source of inspiration not only to me but to everyone you came it in contact with it seems.

Daniel and Laura, you are in my prayers. I know I can't begin to understand how much you hurt but I can say that anyone at DCSO will do anything to help you, in any way we can.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Chief Martin and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Chief Martin has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Chief Martin, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Chief Martin is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

"A Part Of America Died,"
Somebody killed a policeman today,
And part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
Will be buried with him at his side.
The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
With counsel demanding his rights.
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
And spend many long lonely nights.
The beat he walked was a battle field too
just as if he had gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
In your town or mine,
While we slept in comfort behind locked doors,
A cop put his life on the line.
Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And stands at each new rookies' side.
He answered the call,of himself and gave his all,
And a part of America died.

Every day I come to this memorial sight, and hope I will not see another officer down. I come here with a heavy heart and hope that the reflections here will in some small way be a comfort to the family, friends and all who knew CD Tommy Martin. You will be in our prayers and thoughts and know he was a HERO.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL
