29 years! Such a faithful servant. The words of President Lincoln to a mother who lost her son in battle best express my prayer and thought for Chief Deputy Martin's family and friends: "I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of freedom."

I HEARD ABOUT THE INCIDENT THAT ENDED UP CLAIMING YOUR LIFE ABOUT A MONTH AGO FROM A FAMILY MEMBER THAT LIVES IN CHAMPAIGN, ILL. I HAVE CHECKED THE WEB SITE EVERY DAY TO BE SURE THAT YOUR NAME WAS NOT ON IT. IT WAS MY WAY OF BEING SURE THAT YOU WERE OKAY. I WAS SADDENED TO FIND YOUR NAME ON THIS PAGE YESTERDAY. I HAVE VIEWED THE PICTURES FROM THE STAND-OFF THAT RESULTED FROM YOUR EFFORTS TO STOP THESE TWO CRIMINALS. CONGRADULATIONS ON A JOB WELL DONE SIR. YOU HAVE MADE A SACERFICE THAT ENSURED NO ONE ELSE WOULD HAVE TO DIE OR SUFFER IN THIER MURDEROUS RAMPAGE. FOR THIS WE ARE IN-DEBT TO YOU ALWAYS. THANK YOU FOR SEEING YOUR LIFE AS LESS VALUABLE THAN THOSE YOU SERVE. BE SURE THAT IT WAS NOT, BUT BY YOU ACTING IN THIS MANNER YOU HAVE SET AN EXAMPLE FOR ALL OTHER OFFICERS AND HAVE SET THE BAR HIGH. PLEASE WATCH OVER THOSE OF US THAT ARE STILL OUT THERE 10-8 AND ENJOY YOUR REWARD. YOU'VE EARNED IT!

A simple thank you is not enough to express the gratitude that we have for your contributions to our profession. For almost three decades you spent your life wearing the uniform protecting each one of us and undoubtedly making a profound impact on those you came into contact with. It is so very unfortunate and tragic that we lose you by the hand of evil that you have worked against.
May you find the peace that you are so well deserved. Blessings and strength to you and your family.
"Now cracks a noble heart. Good night, sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."
Respectfully submitted on behalf of my department,
