Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Deputy Sheriff Joshua Everett Norris

I seen the show tonight dedicated to your service. I feel sorrow for the friends and family that you left behind. I hope if I am ever in that situation you will be looking over me all your brothers in blue.
May you rest in peace.

I just saw the "Rookies" program that aired tonight and wanted to say that it looked like were on your way to becoming an excellent officer.
As a supportive citizen, I leave my condolences to your family, fiancee, fellow offices, and your training officer who was on scene with you.

To Josh's Family and Co-workers,
You have given the greatest honor to his memory by allowing tonight's show to air. The pain and sorrow have been reopened for you all, but know that anyone who watched that show was touched. I pray for his Family, Co-workers and his FTO. As an FTO supervisor I know his greatest fear was realized that night, and only hope he can carry on the way Josh would expect him to . Take care Josh, in your passing you have touched officers that you would have never met.

Josh,
Wow..........I saw the A&E Rookies program tonight and your smiling, caring, sincere face and story touched me deeply. So I googled you and found this sight and was happy to see that you have not been forgotten and have touched and continue to touch so many lives. THANK YOU for your service, dedication and ultimate sacrifice that you've made to the state of Louisiana. I was really sadded to hear that you had passed away by a careless individual. God took you too early and I'm sorry. I loved the video and what a great memorial to you and your family GOD Bless you!!

I just finished warching the show. Didn't know it was going to end like that, it it took my breath away when they showed scenes from your funeral. So, I got on here to pay my respects to you. The world is a lesser place without you in it, and heaven is much safer now that you're there. Rest in peace, brother.

Deputy Josh Norris,
I just saw your story on A&E. I am a newly sworn officer just as you were and of very similar age. Like you I am now in the FTO program and eager to learn. Unfortunately the world is cruel and God has his own plan for all of us.

Earlier today I made a trip to the county hospital to tell another officer that I am here for him, the academy class that I graduated from is here for him, for him and his family. Everday that I log on to this website I am saddened to see another one of our brothers or sisters pass on.

Everyday when I leave for work I tell my mother that I love her and the days that I don't, it doesn't sit well, so I call. The officer that I visited this afternoon was on a call that would commonly be viewed as a "routine call" for some. A burglary alarm at a school went off in the early morning hours. The officers respond routine and it turns out to be a good call, the suspect runs out the front door and into one of the responding officers.

It is a two man call, a lot of us commonly do not wait for backup. Because of your story my eyes are open now. Alarms are two-person calls, so are domestic violence calls. We are not here to quarterback the incident, but to reflect and learn from it.

The suspect in the incident encountered the responding officer and a struggle followed. The officer's service weapon discharged in the struggle and struck the officer in the head. Luckily, God was looking out for us. Saint Michael looked over the officer on my department and the bullet did not take his life.

I still remember the day that the last officer on my department was taken from us. It was Friday, June 27, 2008. I was off that day from the academy. I had just completed my first week of Basic Survival Training, the last phase of the academy. Sgt Richard S. Findley #2515 was taken from us with a violent criminal act and we will never forget. I will never forget today when I heard your story, nor will I never forget July 5th.

I was eager just as you were that day. You were doing the job that I was in the application process for that same day. I never knew you, but now, through this website and A&E's special I can put a story behind your photo here.

May God bless your family and your department. Rest in peace Brother, we have the watch now.
We do not know why things happen. All of us look back on some calls for service, on some traffic stops and we are astonished that we were not injured or caught in a problem we had to navigate out of.

Josh,
I'm proud of you brother! As young as you were, you knew you wanted to help people and be in law enforcement. Most guys your age are still trying to figure out what to do in life. You Took on a huge responsibility and loved every minute of it. What a great person you are. I wish I had a chance to have met you! It doesnt get any better than you!! God Bless you!!

Josh,
I just saw the show dedicated to your memory. I was so proud to see that you had passed the FTO program, and smiled as I watched you make mistakes and learn so quickly from them... You reminded me of my days of being a rookie. I laughed when I saw your FTO tug on your gun because you weren't positioned correctly while speaking with someone. My FTO did the same thing to me!! I was shocked at the end to find out that you had been killed. I immediately came to the site to post a message to you. I wanted you to know that your story touched me and you made a difference. I am no longer a rookie, and have 6 years under my belt, but I still remember feeling the exact same things you felt, being brand new. Josh, I hope you continue to watch over all of your brothers and sisters in blue... I know you are walking the streets of Heaven with St. Michael - the patron saint that you always held so close to you. Rest in peace, Josh. Your story lives on!
You will never be forgotten.

I just saw your story on The Rookies and can only wonder how hard this must have been on your family, and you - after all the work that you put into getting where you did. I am also a rookie and know how much one can love this job and the great feelings that come with it. It is obvious that you served with pride, ability, and serious potential. We can only wonder "why" these things happen, and especially to one of our own. I will remember you when I look at the thin blue line on my wrist band. Help watch over us up there. May God bless your family for sacrificing an amazing contributor to those who needed you more than words can describe.

i just watched "Rookies" tonight and it featured your episode. I had not heard of you before toight and when it came to the end and stated how you were on your own in June 2007, then flashed to how you became engaged on July 4th I got a knot in my stomach.... I knew what the next message coming across the screen would be. I cried for you tonight, a person I never met. God Bless you and your family.

Ilearned ofJosh's sacrafice from the A&E show that aired 11-4-08. I wanted to let the friends, family, and coworkers to know that althought his service was short he will be missed and is in heaven continuing his watch over us. His E.O.W. Date brings back memories of my Sgt. Bill McEntee who gave his life on 7-5-05. It hurts me and I know that Sgt. McEntee will take Josh under his wings. Stay stong and God Speed.
