Although Kelly (A185) Fredinburg worked at Marion County for under a year, I defiantly see how he earned his nickname, “Spark Plug”, over in Polk County. He was in high gear for all 12 hours of the 12-hour shift. When someone yelled for cover, you did not hesitate. You died a hero and will always be remembered as such. Kelly is the first Marion County Deputy to die in the line of duty and will not be forgotten. . We will continue hunting those warrants, just like The Dog would have wanted us to do.

Kelly-
Today I had the unfortunate task of contacting several of our former DPSST classmates to tell them you passed. Even though it's been a while since we all talked or seen one another, it was a shock to find out it was you that had passed. I already miss you bro. It seems like yesterday we hung out after class, telling jokes, laughing, causing mischief in our dorm, or watching movies. You helped me get my test scores up by being my tenacious study buddy. You used to crack me up by waking me up, way before I needed to on test days, and quizzing each other with flashcards. You were one of the funniest and most genuine people I have ever met. I recall you always talking about your daughter and family. I can recall how excited we were, looking forward to our careers ahead, serving our communities. Your wife, two daughters, family, and peace officers everywhere should be proud of how you positively affected the people you came across. Ironically, just last month I started to donate to the COP's Fund. It was an honor to be your classmate and friend. We will never forget you.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.
