You were a great friend, I loved you from the day that I met you. I find it hard to imagine my life without you, yet blessed to have shared it with you. You were always there for me and I know you will be watching over all of us. I miss you, I love you, you will always be in my heart.

My family and I offer our deepest condolences to the family and friends of brave fallen warrior Jason West, who sacrificed his life to protect all of us from harm. Although words cannot soften the pain of this fine officer's loss, please know there are many of us who have Jason and his family/friends in our hearts and prayers.
Although I am now retired, and living 2,500 miles away, this tragedy hits close to home. I grew up in Cleveland Heights, and once lived on Altamont Ave., only a few houses from where the shooting occurred. My cousin, now retired from CHPD, inspired me to become a police officer.
Throughout my Cleveland Police career, I came to know and respect many fine CHPD officers. And I know that Jason West epitomized the highest standards of both CHPD and the entire police profession. He will be truly missed.
May he rest in eternal peace, and may his family and friends someday find peace in their lives.
Respectfully,
Robert O'Brien -- Cleveland Police Dept SWAT Sergeant (Retired)

To the West Family,
Although I did not know your loved one, I know several men who have offered the sacrifice that your loved one has given. It will not be easy on you but you must know that this is what Jason wanted and this is what he had to offer. He offered his life for the benefit of others. I have come to realize that there are very few men in this world who have the moral courage to do what Jason has done. Although it is sad and painful, I pray that you will find comfort in knowing that Jason had the courage to protect the welfare others. That type of courage is not common in this day and age.
Although you will miss him, please understand that this country NEEDS men like Jason .I was able to sleep at night while fighting in Iraq, knowing that Jason and men like him were at home protecting my family. There are no words that will ease your pain but please remember that Jason gave his life for a profession that he loved. He was the ultimate professional guardian and he paid the ultimate sacrifice. Please know that you will find more reasons to celebrate his life than you will to mourn his death. He is a true "HERO". May GOD look upon you in this trying time.

"I remember who you used to be
the laughter we shared
and wonder what you have become.
Where are you now,
Where did you go,
When the body is left behind
and the spirit is released to fly?
Perhaps you are the morning bird
singing joyfully at sunrise,
or the butterfly that dances
so carelessly on the breeze
or the rainbow of colors
that brightens a stormy sky
or the fingers of afternoon mist
delicately reaching over the mountains
or the final few rays of the setting sun
lighting up the skies
edging the clouds with a magical glow.
I miss your being
but I feel your presence,
In whatever form you choose to take,
however you now choose to be.
Your spirit has become for me
a guardian angel on high
guiding, advising, and watching over me.
I remember you.
You are with me
and I am not afraid."

I feel awkward leaving this reflection, and I apologize if I am intruding on your brotherhood, but Jason was a dear friend of mine. I was told of this site by another officer-friend and felt that I needed to put some thoughts down for this man. I went to High School with Jason & we dated through school. He stayed very close with my family, especially my Dad. Jason is like a son to him, and now a brother to me. We will never be the same. He was the best of all of us.
All I can say, is Thank You to each and every police officer who serves our great country. I have always wished that I was strong enough to do what you all do everyday, never asking for anything in return, or recognition for your daily work. Everytime I hear of a fallen officer, I send up a prayer to God for the officer & his/her family. I will continue to do so, but it will be more personal now. God Bless Police Officers everywhere, and God Bless the USA!!!

On August 11, 2004 we also had an Officer ambushed in a like situation as he responded to a 911 hang up call. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and co-workers of the Cleveland Heights Police Department. Every one of you are in my thoughts and prayers. I know the anger, frustration and thoughts of "why". God Bless you my brother and as you patrol the streets of gold, you serve as a gaurdian angel to us all. Talk to each other, express your feelings and dont ever be to shy about letting the family know that WE will never forget. Rest in peace.
