Reflections for Officer Jason West
When I was in Iraq, the only thing that made it bearable was that I knew there were people at home watching my own family. Officer West, even though you and I never met, know that your sacrifice will never be forgotten. I give my heartfelt condolances and sympathies to his family, and know that you and Officer West are in my prayers, now and forever.

Jason,
I had the honor of driving your father, mother, sister, and grandmother from the coroner's office to the funeral home. I'll never forget what your grandmother said when she seen all your fellow officers that were there just to get you home. With her voice quivering she said "look at all of them here for my Jason". It was hard to fight back the tears every time we passed someone on the side of the road waving a flag, some even saluting. But know that the tears your family cried were not just that of sadness, but of pride. They were so proud of you.
I was two years behind you in school, so I didn't have class with you. But I remember being on the sidelines in football. Coach Lindway would be yelling at you to watch out for a play or a certain player. I can still hear it cause he'd only scream your last name..."West!...West!....." Or in baseball when you would make a smart ass comment to Coach Eaton and we would all laugh as he gave you the evil eye.
I hope you know how many people's lives you touched. I was there at the hospital the night you passed away. It was a crowded room. The next day I set out to tell as many of our teachers and friends I could think of so they would hear it from one of us and not on the news. There was not one person I told that did not have a tear in there eye or a quiver in their voice.
Always know my brother that you may be gone, but you will never be forgotten.

I was at the Memorial Parade last week and noticed the Cleveland Hts. Honor Guard. I thought to myself "How sharp they looked". They had smiles on their faces, as we all did. Although Memorial Week is a time for reflection and rememberance to all those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, it's also a time for us to enjoy each other's company and camaraderie. We have a good time all weekend long. On 5/31/07, we will once again be in our Class A's, our Truman's, or our Honor Guard uniforms. We will once again experience camaraderie. The difference is we will not have smiles on our faces. We will not have a good time. We will bury a brother. We will bury a piece of ourselves. We do this as a family. We do this too often.
To CHPD, family and friends of Ofc West...May you take comfort knowing that Ofc West's sacrifice will never be forgotten. He is a hero to us all. Godspeed Brother West. We have the watch now.
