Reflections for Probation Officer David Poling

Poling...
Well, it has been two weeks and i still can't believe it. I just can't believe this happened to MY buddy.
You know, I have a lot of memories that I will carry with me forever and ever. Just like you told me that every time you ate at a fast food restaurant you thought of me because one time when we were in the academy and went out to eat, I refused to order mayo on my sandwich and had them give me packets instead because I didn't want warm (spoiled) mayo on my sandwich. You made me laugh sooo hard over that and then went home and told Michelle! I was so emberassed and now I am telling it on this page. LOL
We really had some awesome times in the academy just as we have had many since.
I know you were doing what you loved to do that night, no doubt in my mind. I am going to miss those phone calls where you would excitedly (with "the voice") tell me about something that happened on your shift and then I would tell you my big story of the evening. There are so many things I am going to miss or should I say am missing, like your warm smile, soft voice and that contagious laughter...you know the one where you would throw your head back and laugh from your belly. I just miss you period!!!
As you know, after my 21 year old sister passed away February 2 of this year, I didn't think I had a heart to break anymore. It felt as if someone tore my chest open and ripped my heart out. But I found out that i indeed still have one and the remaining pieces broke May 22, 2007 when they called and said you were missing. I cried, I threw up. Still makes me physically sick...
I miss you!
Although you never got to meet my sister Mary, when you see her in heaven you will know her. She looks like me and acts like me too, so you two will quickly become great buddies just as you and I did. Introduce her to Josh and Dale and Brian too.
My deepest sympathy to Michelle and the girls, your husband and daddy was an awesome man with an awesome heart, a true hero.
And Matt... You know and I know. You feel it and I feel it. I love him as you do and I am sorry for the loss of our brother.

Dave you are and forever will be in my thoughts and prayers. I could describe you in so many ways but the one that comes to mind is a man's man. You were above and beyond what every man should try to accomplish and be as a person. I love you, I pray for you and I will always be here for your three beautiful ladies.
To Michelle, Kayla and Fayth you will always be a part of Jen and I's life.

"True heroism is remarkably sober, very undramatic. It is not the urge to surpass all others at whatever cost, but the urge to serve others at whatever cost."

Dave, the above quote defines you and all that you lived for. Everyday that you put on a uniform, wether it be for the court, the PD, the S.O., or your bunker gear, I believe you had the urge to serve others at whatever cost. You were one of the best, Dave. The local community has lost a great man. Even though you won't be with us physically, your legacy will live in so many hearts forever. If I can live my life even half as well you have lived yours, I am confident I will die a great man. I will pray for your wife and kids, but don't worry about them. They have a huge family of us down here that will go out of our way to do ANYTHING for them. Godspeed brother. Keep an eye on all of us down here. I know that you will, because that is the man that you are, a true HERO.

Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. Matthew 5:9
