I can't express the gratefulness I feel for the act of bravery that Officer Newbill provided to us, the citizens of Moscow, Idaho. He performed an act so selfless in order to serve the fellow members of the community. I will never be able to express enough gratitude to this man or his family - He is truly a hero. Know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers- and may you find comfort in knowing how much this man is appreciated and loved. To the Moscow Police Department and the Latah County Sheriff's Department -- I know you lost a family member as well, and I thank you for your continued protection of our close knit community. You are all true heros for carrying out your duties of protection and safety - something that all too frequently gets overlooked. Things such as this event should never happen in our community, or elsewhere. Thank you for your service.
I am forever grateful--

As the events of Saturday night unfolded, we, the citizens of Moscow, Idaho were amazed with the outstanding protection of the law enforcement(local and surrounding areas). It is amazing to me that you never hesitated to protect and serve this community and in doing so you will be held in the highest honor by those you protected. This quiet town was bombarded with gunfire Saturday night that ripped through our quiet streets. The gunfire has subsided but the shock still remains. We all grieve for you and your family and can't begin to fathom what they are going through. Please know that they are in our hearts and you will always be a "Hero" in the eyes of our community. God speed.

Lee Newbill was my supervisor when I was a nightwatch security guard at the University of Idaho from 1999-2001. He was an excellent man; smart, funny, kind, and dedicated to his family, his friends, his colleagues and his community.
I am deeply saddened by his loss and eternally grateful for having known him.
May God bless his dear wife and his children.

Officer Lee Newbill was my friend. I had the pleasure of working with him when he worked for the University of Idaho. When he came to the MPD he became a friend. He was a friend of everyone he met at MPD.

I haven't been able to go a minute without thinking of you Lee. The hard times we gave each other joking around that always ended, "Oh, Lee".

I worked with Lee as his supervisor. I worked with him as a peer. He was always my friend.

I was planning to ask Lee to go for a motorcycle ride with me this summer. I had some ideas and was working out where to go and when to ask. I never got the chance. I owe you a ride Lee.

We all love you. God Speed, Lee S. Newbill!

Thank God there are men walking the earth who, instead of fleeing danger, charge in to help their fellow human beings without regard for their own safety. The best way for evil to overcome the world is for good men to do nothing. Sergeant Newbill was a Good Man. We thank him for his service and will remember his family in our prayers.

The policeman stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,

"No lord, I guess I ain't,

Because those of us who carry a badge

can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,

and at times my talk was rough,

and sometimes I've been violent,

Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep

Though I worked a lot of overtime

When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at time I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place

Among the people here.

They never wanted me around

Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne

Where the saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly,

For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,

You've born your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,

You've done your time in hell"

Lee,

We knew each other as friend and colleague in ROTC at the University of Idaho and I only recently discovered that you had joined the brotherhood of law enforcement in Moscow, where my law enforcement career began. I knew you to be a fine man then, always cheerful and positive, and am sure you put the same helpful, people oriented focus on your public service to the citizens of Moscow.

I place you in the same regard as I do my friend and colleague, John Kevin Lamm, whom we lost under similar circumstances in 1998. You are a true hero, lost responding to help the citizens your served, and we are all better for having known you and mourn your loss.
