Reflections for Police Officer Lee Stewart Newbill

Lee, thank you so much for rushing to protect your Dispatchers and the other citizens of Moscow. You will always be remembered! Rest in peace in the arms of Jesus.

I am not a resident of Moscow. My daughter has attended U of I for the last four years. I actually live in a small community in the Sierra Nevada Mtns. of California. I just wanted to let you know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family. My daugher has been far away from home and I have been okay with that because Moscow is a small town, and a close community with dedicated professionals, such as Officer Newbill, working around the clock to keep the peace and keep my daughter and others safe. I am so saddened that this terrible tragedy happened to Moscow and certainly that it happened to you and your beloved Lee Newbill. Mowcow is a wonderful place and it is people like your husband that contribute so much to that. God be with you all and keep you in his care.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Newbill family during this very difficult time. I have fond memories of working with Lee during my time at the University of Idaho. He always had a smile regardless of the situation. I know that he will be missed by his family, friends and the Moscow community. His bravery and heroism in a time when so many where frightened will be his legacy.

I was introduced to Officer Newbilll while working as a parking enforcement officer with the U of I and throughout my years of service with the U of I I had many opportunities to work with Officer Newbill at many different events such as Football games and other athletic events, The Lionel Hampton Jazz Fest and many more. He always had a fun loving happy way about him and you rarely saw him without a smle onhis face. He became a very good friend to me and he was always good about the way I would give him a hard time. Many times did I challenge him to a drag race in his squad car and he would always reply " win or loose you have to pay for the citation. "

I remember that I would always feel comforted when I was working the 4:00am shift or the late night shift to find out that he was the officer on Campus patrol. he was always good for a laugh, to talk too when I was having personal problems with work or family, he was a wonderful person all around. When I received the call from my sister telling me about a Moscow Poliece Officer being shot and Killed I was genuinely saddened but when she told me that name of the officer was Lee Newbill I felt my heart shatter as if someone had smashed it with a sledge hammer. I was devastated. I am very glad that I was given the opportunity to meet and work with Officer Newbill even though it was such a short time. He will be missed and remembered by me, My family and this community.

Go With God Lee. We love you very much.

My condolences and prayers are with Officer Newbill's family and with the Moscow PD. I have seen the pages of rememberances from others in the business. At a funeral for two Riverside PD officers in 1971 Rev John J. Campion said in his eulogy: "If every individual had the respect for one another that a police officer has for another police officer, what a different world this would be." How true that is. God Bless the Job and the folks in it.

A Part Of America Died
--Author Unknown

Somebody killed a Policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that killed him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights.
While a widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
in your hometown or in mine.
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each rookies side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,

And A Part Of America Died.
-------

Rest in peace Officer Newbill. To his friends, family and co-workers, my condolences. One of my friends and a co-worker was killed on duty by a drunk driver in early April. The pain is excrutiating and you feel like you will never stop crying, but in time you will begin to heal. It's such a senseless death but know he gave the ultimate sacrifice doing what he loved. I now live in
Spokane and it's a tribute to his character that so many people out here loved him so much. My heart goes out to you all.
