May 20, 2007

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Deputy Scarlett and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Deputy Scarlett has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Deputy Scarlett, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Deputy Scarlett is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Scarlett,

Many people don't realize the sacrifice law enforcement officers make every day of their lives, and they only pause and reflect when one makes the ultimate sacrifice, and gives their life in the line of duty. But your dedication, and your sacrifice, was more than just one final moment on a dreary Sunday morning. You gave your life, figuratively, and ultimately literally, to the cause of upholding and protecting the laws of this state and this country. In every sense of the word, you are a hero, and were a hero everyday you put on that badge.

All of us are wearing black stripes over our badges in your honor. We will be wearing them for some time to come. But ultimately, when they are removed, you will still be in our hearts, minds, and prayers every day each one of us puts on the badge and goes to work. And every day we go to work, we honor and salute you for your sacrifice, and remember the courage you and yours showed each day you were with us.

And to those you leave behind, know that your courage will be rewarded. One day, Marvin will be with you again, for it is the destiny of all heroes to ascend to Heaven, there to wait for their loved ones. And each day until that day and beyond, we honor him.

I salute you, Scarlett. I'll miss you.
