Deputy Habelt, as a police officer, I take great pride in knowing there are cops like you on the street. While most people in their 60's are retired, you were out there making a difference in the community and placing your life in danger. I can't help but to think that your actions, along with the actions of your partner, saved the lives of other deputies and of innocent civilians. You lived and died a hero and should never be forgotten. Please keep a watchful eye from above.

Orlando Police Dept.

I have come here several times to say my good-byes, but I find myself weeping and tears flowing from my eyes. Paul, you are such a great friend to all. When I moved to Henderson County in 2000, I had very little. I had the fear of not knowing anyone, but God blessed me with friends that have become a part of my family. From patrol, to investigations, you were always there to assist and provide your protection. No matter what; from a simple traffic stop, to minor or major investigations, I have turned around several times to find you sitting in your patrol unit watching over us or to offer your assistance. I hear your voice; I see your face, for every time you were there to help or even just listen. You left your footsteps all over Henderson County for many to follow. I will cherish every moment that I got to share with you and in hopes someday that I may leave the same footsteps behind for another officer to follow. May God Bless you and your family. Rest in Peace my friend as you have completed your final tour of duty in Henderson County with honor and integrity.

The policeman stood and faced God,

Which must always come to pass.

He hoped his shoes were shining,

Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.

How shall I deal with you?

Have you always turned the other cheek?

To my church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,

"No lord, I guess I ain't,

Because those of us who carry a badge

can't always be a saint."

I've had to work most Sundays,

and at times my talk was rough,

and sometimes I've been violent,

Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,

That wasn't mine to keep

Though I worked a lot of overtime

When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,

Though at time I shook with fear.

And sometimes, God forgive me,

I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place

Among the people here.

They never wanted me around

Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,

It needn't be so grand.

I never expected or had too much,

But if you don't I'll understand.

There was a silence all around the throne

Where the saints had often trod.

As the policeman waited quietly,

For the judgement of his god.

"Step forward now, policeman,

You've born your burdens well.

Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,

You've done your time in hell"

Clinton Police Department

To the family of Deputy Habelt,
Fifteen years ago this October my husband answered a domestic disturbance call and also lost his life. I know that there are no words that I could say right now that would make the pain lessen, but just wanted to let you know that your family is, and will be, in my prayers as you go through this difficult time.
God Bless You,
Peggy Zimmerman
