Reflections for Corporal N. Bruce McKay, III

I hate that this happened. The years have not erased the feelings of that night. I was home, in my kitchen, with my scanner as "white noise" when all of a sudden something tuned me in to the scanner. All of a sudden it wasn't white noise. Something was wrong, and during those initial seconds/minutes (which seemed like hours) , I couldn't figure any of it out, but I knew that something was terribly wrong. It took me about 18 minutes to make the usual 45-50 minute drive to Grafton. The rest, although totally impossible, I just want to never re-live. My co-workers with solemn faces when I entered the office. The call from your father demanding answers and us not able to handle them ~ it was a direct order from the High Sheriff that we not answer anything until appropriate people were informed in the proper manner and somewhat of a 'proper notification' was made. In my mind ~ how does anyone handle that kind of notification, properly?? I not only remember you as "44K" and your nightly notifications that you were "10-02 and on your way home on your motorpickle. 'If you call me within the next 20 minutes or so and I don't answer, it's just because I'm on my 'motor pickle." to the crazy conversation that started with, "You sound like you're on the toilet." "Yes Bruce. I am. Dispatchers poop too!!" and of course, more importantly than work, when our daughters began kindergarten together and the play dates that Courtney came to our house for. When our girls began Kindergarten "way back then" they were best friends from the start. We stood in that crazy Kindergarten classroom ~ both of us with tears in our eyes, noticing instantly that our girls had become good friends, already. For some strange inexplicable reason, we both just knew that things were going to be okay when we left them, unsupervised, to play. There are very few days, even now, that I don't think of you. Sometimes, license plates make be remember (you're early days in Lisbon, your plate was 'FESSUP'). You are thought of fondly by many. I wish I had the chance to meet Sharon. I am certain that we would have shared many chuckles. This is a rough time of year for many of us ~ both personally and professionally. Rest in the utmost peace, Bruce. I know that you are with some of the best and knowing you, insisted on bringing your 'motor~pickle."

It is hard to believe it has been 4 years since that horrible night. It seems like yesterday. You are never far from my thoughts. I do wish that dreadful night never happened and you would be here with your many friends and family who love you very much. In life you impacted so many lives in such a positive way. My you continue to watch over us protecting and service our Lord. May God be with you Corporal McKay.

Four years have passed since your death, Bruce. It's difficult to fathom this stretch of days and the all changes that have happened during this time. Wiser and not as naive to the evils of this world, I move forward. Since that horrible, unbearable Friday eve, 11 May 07, time has eased the sting but an emptiness in my heart will always remain. I have stopped crying daily over your loss. Instead I have found it more comforting to smile knowing the depth of love that we shared. <3

Love is not written on paper, for paper can be erased. Nor is it etched on stone, for stone can be broken. But it is inscribed on a heart and there it shall remain forever.

Rest in peace, Norman Bruce McKay.... one of New Hampshire's best.

You can shed tears because he is gone.
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone.
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back.
Or you can do what Bruce would want: Smile, Open your Eyes, Love and Go on.

Another holiday season without you, B. Always in my heart and thoughts...

Letter From Heaven:
To my dearest family, some things I’d like to say…
But first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I’m writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there’s no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I’m out of sight.
Remember that I’m with you every morning, noon and night.

That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, “I welcome you.”
It’s good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they’ll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you’re part of my plan.
There’s so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.”
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day’s chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you…in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
Because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn’t understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is over.
I’m closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
But together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I’d like it for you too..
That as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who’s in sorrow and pain,
Then you can say to God at night…”my day was not in vain.”
And now I am contented…that my life has been worthwhile,
Knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
Just lean a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you’re walking down the street, and you’ve got me on your mind;
I’m walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it’s time for you to go…from that body to be free,
Remember you’re not going…you’re coming here to me.

These were your thoughts for sure!

It's polished, shiny & looks so fine. Once earned, you tow the line. When worn upon your chest it becomes a symbol that you are the best. It means honesty, integrity, and fairness to all. Your life is never your own, but at the public's call. Over the years the shine starts to fade, but brighter still is the person it's made. It's often what separates you from the crowd, it is a second family of which you are proud.

Always my love ...
