Reflections for Police Officer David Young
"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

David,
I am a better person having known you, I only wish I had known you better. You are greatly missed. I still expect to see you on your motor in the morning when I am on my way in to the office, and you are on your way out to the street. I can't recall one time when you didn't wave or have that smile on your face. Your smile and laugh could make any day better. I know that good will come out of this horrible tragedy. I am comforted with the fact that at this very moment you are with the same Christ that you served and loved so much. You will not be forgotten.

On Thursday May 3, 2007 The Florence Police Department lost a very valuable person. Officer David Young was killed in a motorcycle accident. David was a child of GOD a teacher and a preacher of his word. At first I questioned why him, why David, he was ministering to so many people and I just did not understand why and then a very special friend of mine sent me an email and it helped me so very much. It said God has showed us that he is using David's death for good and that the devil had meant for it to be evil. There will be many lives saved because of his tragic death...sometimes it takes a tragedy to bring a new beginning. David enjoyed ministering to others and actually that is what he has done. He has lived his life for CHRIST and has shown others how to live...We should live like there is no tomorrow and that is what is so evident with this whole horrible accident. David is still ministering just in a different way and place. Please keep David's family in your thoughts and prayers!!!!!

David is an example of what being a good man in this mixed up world is all about. He exemplified Public Service in the best sense of the term. It was a calling to Officer Young. As a public official myself his spirit will be with me as I go forward. I wish his lovely wife and family well and tell them that we love them and are here always. Godspeed.

Let your light shine, and you did. Your were an example of what an officer was to be. Most people don't know this, David at one time mowed the grass of a one sweet lady's yard who husband had passed away with cancer for three years and at one time she tried to pay him, and he cried and refuse it. And at one time on the range I offer to pay for his meal for the help he gave, and he refuse it. They just don't come any better than he did. A man of God, a honor to the badge, a great man, and one who LET HIS LIGHT SHINE.

David I miss you! All those years that I was on Night shift I didn't have the opportunity to work with you. I am so glad now that I moved to Day shift. If I hadn't, I might never have really gotten to know you like I did. I might never have known what a warm, funny, sweet, thoughtful, caring Christian person you were, and a great officer! I am grateful for the last 3 years. I miss our talks over coffee every morning. Thanks for always listening, for your wise words of wisdom (you know what I'm talking about) and being a friend. Your sweet infectious smile and big laugh always brightened our day. We will always remember how you walked into dispatch and greeted us with "There's my favorite dispatchers!" Work is not the same without you, but I keep reminding myself that you are in Heaven now with our Lord & Savior, and that makes me smile. I will continue to pray that Donna, Aimee and D.J. find strength, comfort, and peace in the days ahead. Rest in peace my friend. I love you.

What a Friend, David was a one of a kind person, kind, considerate and very caring.
He is a great Christian Person that lived that life every day. I always enjoyed joking with him and calling him Mr. Smiley, because he always was smiling.
He touched so many lives with his Christian Faith and the way he conducted himself.
I will miss you very much as a great friend and my heart and prayers go out to your loving family and I am so sorry for the hurt they are having to go through.
God bless you and your family.
