The Florence Police Department suffered a huge loss from the death of one of the finest motor officers I have ever had the pleasure of working with and being able to call a friend.
During my time working with Davey, I was lucky enough to become friends with not only him, but his wife Donna and children Amy and D.J. Some of the best memories from my time at the department was at the Children's Christmas Party at the skating rink. Seeing Davey tearing it up on that floor in his skates was too funny. But hey, he was a pretty good skater!
When I was on Day A and had to work a wreck, Davey would always take care of me. Never did he leave me to do a wreck report. Which also brings me to the others on the traffic unit. I still consider you all my big brothers who always protected me. When I had my wreck on duty a few years ago, I remember the comfort of the first people I saw being Davey, Ticer, and Jackie. I knew at that very moment that everything was going to be okay. I wish I could somehow return that feeling to you guys (Frazier, Barnett, Ticer, Jim, Jackie, Lance and the rest of the FPD who I still call my family).
David was a family man and a man of God. This should make us all count our blessings and not sweat the small stuff. My thoughts and prayers are with Davey's family and his extended family, the Florence Police Department.
Thanks Davey for all the memories. I will miss you very much! Tell Marty Ray hello for me.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"

As the wife of a motor officer and an officer myself, hearing about Officer Young has hit home in so many ways. The job is dangerous in and of itself, but those of us who live and work with the guys and girls who ride know that there is no greater joy for them and asking them to part with the bike is like asking them to part with a bodypart integral to living.
David Young your love of motors made you special! Getting those wings was a special day. Stand tall as you recieve your angel wings. There is no more riding in the too hot sun, in the cold wind, or the downpours. It's all blue skies and a "perfect day".
To David's wife, children, family and friends, today I pray for you. I do not know you or David -- but we are family. Family of the badge and family of the bike. You are in my prayers.
