As a brother public safety officer, you will truly be missed. I thank you for choosing your calling as a police officer for the City of Rocky Mount and to be willing to give your life to help others. As a firefighter, there have been many times that I have depended on you & your comrades to keep me safe and I thank you for that. Our department is mourning your early departure from this world as if you were one of our own. As a christian, I know that you are in a better place. May God bless your family, friends, and co-workers!

Officer Alan Silver
Rocky Mount, North Carolina
City of Rocky Mount Police Department

-------------------------------------------------------------

To all my family (Both Personal & Professional), friends, neighbors, and acquaintances who read this email, please let it be known, OUR Rocky Mount Police Officer Alan Silver passed away today Wednesday, May 02, 2007 @ 1:11PM. Officer Silver was a young, talented Police Officer who had a lot to offer, and died doing what we, the men & women who walk "The Thin Blue Line" are sworn to do, to "PROTECT AND SERVE."

Officer Silver was 23 years old, and had served in the State of North Carolina specifically the City of Rocky Mount for a period of one year. Officer Silver suffered a great deal of critical injuries that stemmed from a traffic accident while responding Code-3 to an "Armed Robbery IN Progress" call.

In my estimation, Officer Silver's soul was carried away by the "Angles Of The Lord" after his vehicle was struck by an SUV in the intersection of Winstead Avenue & Hunter Hill Road. After a period of approximately 45 minutes, Officer Silver was cut out of his Police Unit 2308, and carried away into an awaiting "Life Flight Helicopter." Life Flight flew Officer Silver to Pitt Memorial Trauma Center in Greenville, North Carolina where a medical team worked on him. At this point, Officer Silver was on "Life Support," and listed in "Critical Condition."

Officer Alan Silver was with us for an additional four days before he was officially pronounced as having passed away today, Wednesday May 02, 2007 @ 1:11PM, (13:11- Law Enforcement & Military Time).

I was honored to have met Officer Silver's family this morning after I completed a 12 hour tour of duty myself. I met his family (Mom, Dad, & brother), as well as close church family, friends, and numerous Law Enforcement Officers from several different agencies. I was particularly impressed and thankful for the "Host Agencies", Greenville Police Department & Sheriff's Department who surrounded our Law Enforcement family during our tragedy, mourning, and then celebration of life!

To all who have ever heard about the "Thin Blue Line," let it be known that even though the line will be stronger & brighter, the line just got a bit thinner today. We will go on, and we will do our best to "Protect & Serve" with distinction and honor. We will do this in memory of our "FALLEN BROTHER," Alan Silver. You can believe this as a true statement, and a matter of fact as we do not have to do what I have professed no, we do this out of our own choosing & free will.

May GOD bless and receive our brother, Police Officer Alan Silver, his family, and all who read this email. Officer Alan Silver is the first Rocky Mount Police Officer to have been killed in the line of duty in it's 147 year history of exsistance. Officer Silver is now "10-42" (Has completed his tour of duty) and will be 10-7 (Out of Service) forever..... Amen!

*** May the "TAPS" Play loud and clear for Alan Silver ****

With the deepest sympathy and a sense of Pride, Honor, and Respect,

Senior Police Officer Darrell F. Martin II
13 year Law Enforcement Veteran

SPO. Darrell F. Martin II

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your son. My son was a California Highway Patrol Officer. His EOW was 11-17-05 Not a day goes by that I don't think about him. I know that this is a hard time for you and nothing I can say will ease your pain. I know you were proud of your son and he served his department with pride. I will be praying for you daily that you will have the strength to get through these next few days, months and years. My heart hurts for you because I know what you are feeling. To Offier Silver's fellow officers I want to say I know that you are feeling the loss also. Law Enforcement is like a family. I want you to know I will be praying for you also and that you are loved and appreciated.

On Memory
When you remember me, it means that you
have carried something of who I am with you,
that I have left some mark on who I am on who you are.
It means that you can summon me back to your mind
even though countless years and miles may stand between us.
It means that if we meet again, you will know me,
and hear my voice and speak to me in your heart.
For as long as you remember me, I am never entirely lost.
~Frederick Buechner

Thank you Officer Silver, for your committment to help keeping us all safe. Rest in Peace.

Shifts Over
By David Pike

We watched as you pinned on your badge for the very first time.
You had trained and studied; learning what was needed to do the job
you would be called upon to do.
How you proudly stood at attention, saluting and repeating the oath,
vowing to give your all and do your best.
But now, shifts over...
lie down and rest.

You left early in the morn, while we slept snug and warm
Just as often you returned in late even'tide when,
long before, we had retired.
You sacrificed your rest and time that we could live and laugh
work and play, knowing we were safe, vowing to give your all and do your best.
But now, shifts over...
lie down and rest.

When we called you answered, whether friend or foe, neighbor or stranger.
You risked life and limb, comfort and safety, always to ensure that we
enjoyed home and workplace, recreation and employment.
You gave of yourself dutifully to the searching faces and pleading hands
reaching to you for help; responding quickly to the slightest call,
vowing to give your all and do your best.
But now, shifts over...
lie down and rest.

Now we stand, sad and somber, quietly listening to Tap's final song.
You answered the call and gave your all as you responded to the last bell of Destiny's alarm.
One last time you pinned on your badge and honored your oath;
seeing nameless faces and unknown grasping hands
You kept your vow, you gave your all, you did your very best.
But now, shifts over...
lie down and rest.

America will never forget you.

Rest in peace Officer Silver. May God be with your family, friends and coworkers now in their time of need. My thoughts and prayers are with them.
