Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer III Luke Timothy Hoffman

Luke, I know I speak for our shift when I say you were a pleasure to work with. From day one you showed you had what it takes to be an excellant officer and you always added humor to even the toughest nights. You and your family will always be in our hearts and minds. Rest in peace. I know you will always be watching over me and the rest of our brothers and sisters. Heroes Live Forever.

"The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

Luke-
We worked in the same station, yet I never got to meet you. I never had the privilege to run a call or share a cup of coffee with you, or see you smile and laugh, and I am worse off for it. I never met you, but I will always miss you.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Officer Hoffman, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.

Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow

When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go

Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow

Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

Luke trained at my station and since he was mostly on the midnight shift, and I work days, I didn't see him often. But when I did, I remember his gentle smile and humor. Being a civilian, I am not officially a part of the 'thin blue line', but like the officers at my department, my heart is breaking over Luke's death. He was very well liked in both our station and the 4th District. I pray for God's hand to be with his family, friends and co-workers as we grive his loss.
