"Just A Cop"

The funeral line was long,
There's an awful lot of cars,
Folks came out of the restaurants,
They came out of the bars.
The workers at the construction sites
All let their hammers drop.
Someone asked. "What is this all for?"
And they said,"Aw, Just A Cop."

Some chuckled at the passing cars.
Some shed a silent tear
Some people said,"It's stupid."
"All these dumb policemen here."
"How come they are not out fighting crime?"
"Or in a doughnut shop?"
"Sure is a lot of trouble,
For someone who's Just A Cop."

They blocked the intersections,
They blocked the interstate.
People yelled and cursed,
"Damn, it's gonna make me late!"
"This is really ridiculous!"
"They're makin' us all stop!"
"It seems they are sure wastin' time,
On someone who's Just A Cop."

Into the cemetery now,
The slow procession comes,
The woeful Taps are slowly played.
There's loud salutes from guns.
The graveyard workers shake their heads
"This service is a flop."
"There's lots of good words wasted,
On someone who's Just A Cop"

Yeah, Just A Cop to most folks.
Did his duty every day.
Trying to protect us,
Till they took his life away.
And when he got to heaven,
St. Peter put him at the top.
An angel asked him,
"Who was that?"
And he said, "Aw, Just A Cop."

The Judgment:

The Officer stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shinning,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Officer,
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"

The Officer squared his shoulder and said,
"No, Lord, I guess I aint,
Because those of us who carry badges can't
always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my talk was rough,
And sometimes I've been violent
Because the streets are tough.

But I never took a penny
That wasn't mine to keep.
Though I worked a lot of overtime,
when the bills got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept an unmanly tear.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here, Lord,
it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't...I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne,
where the saints often trod.
As the officer waited quietly for the judgment of his God.

"Step forward now, Officer."
"You've borne your burdens well."
"Come walk a beat on heaven's streets,"
"You've done your time in Hell"

So many people know your name
Who didn't know it yesterday.
Today a hero; front page news,
The senseless death of a man in blue.
Nick, the whole world knows today
Of the ultimate sacrifice you've made.
Your friends and family - we already knew
The kind of hero that lived in you.
The man that you were every day,
No gunshot wound can take away.
That big sly smile, and "Hey Buddy!"
Will live on in our memories.
Our hearts - they bleed, and we all cry.
You're a hero - not because you died.
Because of how you laughed, loved, and lived.
Nick, in this life, you gave all you had to give.

Aaron and I love you, and will never forget you.

Cpl Nick Polizzotto has been a friend of mine since we were teenagers. He was a man of integrity, honor, and compassion. He was also a great friend with a good sense of humor. He was a loving son and a devoted father.

My father was a police officer for almost thirty years, so I grew up knowing the dangers officers face. I never thought it would hit so close to home. Nick had wanted to be a cop from the day I met him.

Please remember his parents, his siblings, and his friends in your prayers. Most importantly, though, remember his son who has lost his father and his hero.

Godspeed, old friend. While your friends are grieving your loss, we do take some comfort in knowing that we will all meet again some day.

To the family of Corporal Polizzotto,
My brother Lt. Gary Dudley was with the Indiana State Police EOW 8/22/06. Nothing can compare to the grief that you are feeling now. No words or promises of prayer can begin to address the loss that you are experiencing. As my family continues to try and discover what the new "normal" is, my hope is that you find pride in what a remarkable young man Nick was. To give the ultimate sacrifice in defense of the public, to me, demonstrates the fabric this officer was made of. God Bless and our prayers are with you. Dan Dudley

Somebody killed a policeman today,

and part of America died.

A piece of our country he swore to protect,

will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,

with counsel demanding his rights.

While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,

and spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,

just as if he'd gone off to war.

Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,

to his name they will add a gold star.

Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,

in your town or mine.

While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,

a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,

and he stands at each new rookie's side.

He answered the call,

of himself gave his all,

And A Part of America Died.

YOU WILL BE MISSED.

Shoulder to shoulder
standing side by side,
I.L.E.A. graduates are at
attention beaming with pride.

Thoughts towards the future
of a career that lies ahead,
it's all brand new and exciting
with nothing to dread.

The years will add up
and so will the scars,
responding to domestics
and fights at the bars.

Foot chases, pursuits,
and felony stops,
that is just part of our
job as Indiana Cops.

DO IT RIGHT that's
what Indiana Cops do,
whether we are wearing
brown and tan or blue.

Injured in accidents some of
us beat the odds and survive,
we are able to look death in
the face and refuse to die.

Shoulder to shoulder
standing side by side,
each Sunday in church we
thank the Lord we're alive.

But in Indiana and across the
USA in towns large and small,
black shrouds remind us
of those who gave all.

The battle continues none of
their deaths were in vain,
we make sure to honor
the ones who were slain.

My fellow Indiana officers
in whom I can always confide,
we will be shoulder to shoulder
standing side by side.
