Reflections for Police Officer Robert Winget

Officer Winget,
Thinking of Chris and the girls, as well as the Ripon PD family, on the 1yr anniversary of your call to Heaven. Those that are left here, are left to continue on without you. And they are doing so with great sadness. Yet I have seen them Honor you and your memory by continuing to be strong and holding each other up. Please continue to watch over all of them! Your sacrifice will NEVER BE FORGOTTEN. Thank you !

God put that love of law enforcement in your veins and
blessed you with a career for 37 years that you loved.
The purpose of life is to glorify God and you succeeded.
Thanks for being faithful to your calling and blessing all
those who knew and loved you. I'll meet you one day in
that better place we call Heaven where we will worship
King Jesus forever. God bless those who still mourn
your passing.

Okay, I can do this.

"Wing Nut":

Has it already been a year? I was all set to make that trip North for Your Funeral, and then I realized that I had better stay here and grieve. I am glad that I took a photograph of You when You came with Your fellow troops to back us during the 1992 Riots. I have it prominently displayed on my MySpace site.

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

Hey Wingnut:

Of course, I am thinking about You as I read that Officer Michelle Lawless was killed in an ATV accident in the Holeyland / Rotenberger Wildlife Management Area while on patrol for poachers in Florida.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Officer Winget, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Robert, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Robert's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Robert's life was about so much more than the way he died. Robert will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Officer Winget, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

I have very fond memories of "Plastic Man", a nickname he earned from his perfect appearence when in uniform.

I was Bobby's training officer for accident investigation on LAPD. He was not just a partner, I became very good friends with Bobby and His wife Chrisie. We went on several water and snow skiing trips and always had a great time.

I was very sadden upon hearing of his death and I want to give Chrisie and his children my deepest condolences.

Hey trouble! I miss you very much. I can't believe it's already been four months since we lost you. It seems like we're getting back into our routine, but things will never be the same. I miss hearing you on the radio and all of your quirky Bobby-ism's in your radio traffic. I miss bringing in my new toys to show to you. I miss you unleashing Topper on us, usually ending with him chewing something up. :-) I miss seeing you in the backlot, playing with whatever new gadget you just had to have in the Tahoe. I miss your war stories. I miss our moments where we'd just shake our head at things we didn't like.

I just miss the old lion.

I'll always remember the last time I saw you. The last time we talked was short, but it's the most important conversation because it was the last time I ever got to chat with you.

Anywho...just wanted to say hi. Keep an eye out on us from up there.

Bob,

Today I was looking at your old Stan Co. baseball card you gave to my daughter at Hickman School, now as I sit here and read the reflections I can remember vividly all the times just sitting and talking with you while working the security details at Waterford HS games, (A contract you forced me to take) I remember the advice and stories you shared, and your big smile. Even though I know I had told you thanks for everything you gave me, I never will be able to thank you for the best gift you gave me.... your friendship.
Thank you Bob

It has been 40 years since we were together learning and preparing for our future contribution to this world. With a sweet and smiling face you were always eager and available when needed. So we are not surprised that with your athletic skills from track and basketball you chose to first serve our country and then the community for all these years. That fact that you have had a devoted wife and family says a lot for your stability of character. We feel the great loss and are so disappointed that you will not be with us in Novemember for our 40 Year Class Reunion, but look forward to the time when we will all be together for the grand reunion.

DEAR CHRIS AND FAMILY. I HAD ONLY A FEW YEARS ON THE JOB WHEN I FIRST MET BOB. I WAS ASSIGNED TO VALLEY TRAFFIC DIVISION. AS A YOUNG TRAFFIC OFFICER LOOKING UP TO THE OTHER SEASONED OFFICERS IT WAS EASY TO HAVE A PROFOUND RESPECT FOR YOUR HUSBAND. HE ALWAYS TREATED PEOPLE FAIRLY. HE WAS ALWAYS PLEASANT AND RESPECTFULLY OF THE OTHER OFFICERS. I LEARNED A LOT FROM HIM BECAUSE HE WAS APPROACHABLE. NO TRAFFIC QUESTION WAS EVER A STUPID QUESTION. I REMEMBER HIM MOST FOR HIS UNIFORM APPEARANCE. HE WAS ALWAYS LOOKING SHAPE WHICH COMMANDED RESPECT FROM THE PUBLIC HE PROUDLY SERVED. HE ALWAYS WAS PROUD TO "KEEP THE SHINE ON THE BADGE." ON BEHALF OF THE LAPD FAMILY YOU ARE IN OUR HEARTS AND PRAYERS. GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR LOVE ONES.

Robert,
I miss you so very much. Life is no fun without you. No one to talk to, no one to plan things with, no one to harass and to joke around with. I miss calling you a kazillion times a day about nothing at all, meeting you for dinner, suited all up and out the door w/Topper. I miss your car in front of the house. I miss you coming downstairs for coffee in the morning. I miss seeing you at your computer watching Discovery Channel. I miss plopping myself in front of you so you can rub my feet. I miss the serious Bob, the funny Bob, and the "evil eye" Bob. I miss it all. My life will never be the same again. I still cannot fathom that you will never return to me, put your shoes on or use your tools in the garage or wear your cologne or your clothes or uniforms again. My life will never be complete again. I cannot wait to see you again someday. I love you so much. We thought we'd have 33 more years together but we only had 3 more days together. Thank you for all those years. That is all I have left is the memories packed into those years and our three beautiful daughters. I love you and miss you, till me meet again.

I loved Bobby like my own brother. His family and brothers lived next door to us and we went to the same High School, Wm. S Hart High in Newhall/Valencia California. We were all like family. Our Mom's each kept an eye on each others kids when they weren't working. I was there when Bobby came home from Vietnam and we had some good times then. I will always remember his infectious humor and his wonderful smile. Rest in Peace my Brother, I will miss you and love you always. Go class of 1967 Indians!!!!!!

I remember this day. A day of sadness. A fellow Officer and I were in a 11550 class with several officers from Ripon PD. My heart sunk for these officer and the family of Officer Winget when the new was announced during class. It always sadens me when a fellow officer is lost. May Officer Winget rest in peace. My prayers and thoughts go out to Ripon PD and the Winget family.

Bob,
Every little boy, and most big “boys,” too, has heroes. Our heroes are strong, courageous, smart, caring, confident, fearless, and best of all….they’re invincible! Well, Tuesday afternoon, April 10th, 2007, I found out my hero was not invincible. Today, the world feels a little less safe without you.

You served your family, your community, and your Lord and Savior with dedication and zeal uncommon among “mortal men.” God sent you to serve and protect us; and you did, accepting your charge with a joy that can only be found in a servant’s heart. “blessed are the peacemakers,” my friend.

I can close my eyes, and see you there, standing before our Father in Heaven; and He smiles, reaching out His mighty hand to welcome you home, saying those loving words, “well done, good and faithful servant.”

I thank God for you, and for what He did for so many, through you. I love you, and I will miss you until that joyful day when we will be together again.

Godspeed Hero!
Edward
