Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem
The true measure of a man is often known only in death. Reach out to those you love and tell them how much they mean to you, what contributions they make in your life, and how they have made the world a better place because they are here in our lives. It is obvious from the reflections that Lt.Dahlem was loved and respected. I hope the family finds some measure of comfort in the prayers, thoughts and memories that honor the life of Lt.Dahlem in these reflections written by those who will carry on in his memory.

it is with tremendous sorrow that i read about the passing of officer Corey Dahlen. My Daughter is a Junior at the University Of Florida and hes one of the people that made me feel safe about her well being. LT. Dahlem,
Please look down from above and watch over your fellow officers at GPD and abroad. They will feel safer knowing that you are there in spirit to guide them in times of need and difficulty. My heart goes out to your family and friends, who now have to learn to live life without you. I know from experience that being married to a police officer is not easy, there is always fear and worry when they walk out the door, dreading the phone call that could come at any time. You, your family and GPD will be in my thoughts and prayers. You will live on through great memories....Thank you for your dedicated service! Please rest now, you deserve it.

Spoon,
We go back a long way to our antics at Florida State. I’m blessed to have spent my professional career with you. When I came in to work in the mornings to get the day shift ready, I would always look forward to hearing you yell, “What’s up, Cubby!” as I walked by your office and you sat in your chair winding down your midnight shift paperwork. After I gave my, “What’s up, Spoon!” reply, we would sit down and discuss the events of the night shift so I could pass it along to the day shift officers. After we came out of shift briefing, I would tell you we’re 10-8… you all go home; we got it now. I’m so glad that I know you have a personal relationship with Christ and I know where you are and that you are safe. I held your broken body in the street and prayed to God as hard as I could to leave you here with us.
Hey Spoon, go home! We got it now.

To the family, friends, and officers that knew Lt. Dahlem, my thoughts and prayers are with you as you face the trying times ahead of you. Please know your not alone.
Here I am, lost in the light of the moon that comes through my window
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you and the roses
Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow
Here I am, lost in the ashes of time, but who wants tomorrow?
In between the longing to hold you again
I'm caught in your shadow, I'm losing control
My mind drifts away, we only have today
Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way
I will sacrifice 'til the blinding day when I see your eyes
Now I'm living in your afterglow
When the veils are gone as I let you go, as I let you go
Touch me and I will follow in your afterglow
Heal me from all this sorrow
As I let you go I will find my way, I will sacrifice
Now I'm living in your afterglow
Bathed in blue, the walls of my memory divide the thorns from the roses
It's you who is closest

LT,
It's not getting any easier. Shift briefing has been brutual without you there. I see your chair and get hopeful you'll walk in the door at the last minute, but you never do. We're trying to be strong and be there for one another. But even as we act tough, you can see how much everyone misses you. Gunny returned to work today. As he spoke about you, it became evident how our shift is suffering with the loss of one of our own. Our hearts feel for your family; Our hearts bleed for our family. This all seems so unreal. I keep telling myself this is some messed up joke and you're just on vacation...
This might make you smile...Catfish painted you a little something on the wall on SW 34th St. Plus, it seems your LT car has gotten a very unique paint job. I'm sure you like it :) (Sorry, with the majority being UF fans, no one opted to just paint your car in FSU colors...)
till next time...
We Miss You LT!

I met Lt. Dahlem while working at GPD and the times I talked with Dahlem he was professional and a good hearted individual. If you needed help, he would assist you without hesitation. He was always smiling and friendly when I seen him. I am saden to see that a fellow brother (officer)of Lt. Dahlem's character, a good officer and individual has left us. If there is anything that the family needs, or that I or my fellow comrads at CCA, Lake City, Fl. can do, Please let me know. My prayers go out to his family.

Lt, I remember the last conversation that we had and it never crossed my mind that it would be our last. It is not often that we are blessed with knowing someone with such a pure soul.I am thankful to God for allowing us this time with you. I know that you will be watching over us and I hope that we continue to make you proud. I know that you will know what I mean when I say "it seems like just yesterday." And yes sir, Lt it does. I just wish that we had more tomorrows.

Lt, I've only known you a short time, in that time we've worked many DOT details together. During those times I got to know you, I found you to be a very giving and caring man. We both talked about our families and what we expected out of life. I remember what stood out about you was that your family came first before youself. You joked about having to drive the family van while your wife and kids got the cars they wanted and you got to work the over time to pay for them... all the while you were torn between two dreams one of having a Corvett and the other of having a Shelby Mustang, but you put your wants aside so you could give for your family.
I've always appreciated when you saw me you always acknowledged and greeted me by my first name, regardless.
I don't give respect freely to anyone; but you, even now have my utmost respect.
I am so going to to miss the "Detail Countdown". For those who never worked with the Lt. on the DOT details, he kept a running countdown from the moment we started until the final second... on a 5 hour detail, it would be "John, only 4 hours and 59 minutes to go" and he would do this every 10 to 15 minutes until our shift was done.
I'm going to miss you Lt. ...even now the station doesn't feel the same.

To the family of Lieutenant Corey Dahlem,
UF's alums and students are so very saddened by your loss. Your loved one, Corey Dahlem, was protecting his UF and Gainesvile family. Members of our family have attended UF for decades and have seen law enforcement always meet the challenge of taking care of kids who were not their own. For that we are grateful. We will be thinking of you and remembering Lieutenant Dahlem for years to come. He will always be honored in our hearts.
In sympathy,
Fred and Norma Verner

I am a retired Lieutenant from the Gainesville PD and have known Corey 22 years. He was truly one of those special people that everyone liked, and no one could say a bad thing about. He was gentle, humble, kind, funny, but most of all a dependable friend. I always enjoyed his staunch support of Florida State football and we all always had a great time ribbing him about living in Gator country! His presence on this earth was a blessing and he will be missed.

The policeman stood and faced God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining,
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry a badge
can't always be a saint."
I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at time I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
Among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord,
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't I'll understand.
There was a silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgement of his god.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've born your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell"
You are a hero and will always be remembered as one! Watch over your brothers in blue! Godspeed brother!

Lt. Just the other week you began to teach me how to play the guitar. Your talent with the guitar blew me away, I kept thinking to myself there was no way I could play like you. We spoke of our love for music, and how I wanted you to teach me how to play a Pink Floyd song. Your now playing the "great gig in the sky". We've got the watch now my friend, watch over us............and don't laugh to hard when I play my guitar:)
