Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Lieutenant Corey Dahlem

Hey Spooner, I have been thinking of you alot! It has not been easy this past few months. I wait to see you and only to be disappointed that you are not there. I still ask why it was you, and not me! I walked that area night and day and wonder why the one night of celebration and you, a wonderful husband, father and son you were taken so fast from our lives. I am hanging in there and want you to know I miss you very much and I know you are up there looking out for those of us that are still fighting the battle on the streets. Though getting worse and each year that goes by has an even higher number of heros that left us so sensless! I wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and I know you are up there making sure that Sally and your kids will have a good Thanksgiving! I know it must be so difficult for them spending the Holidays without you, but I know between your family, friends, fellow brothers and sisters they will be able to get through the holidays filled with those that love you and comfort them. God Bless you and your family, We love you!

Well Spooner...I still miss you and think of you each early morning that I come and work-out in our gym. I still half think you are going to come up behind me and scare me while I am running on the treadmill. I recently ran the Marine Corp Marathon in DC and wore your ID number. Everyone was yelling "GO 39" and I know you were laughing from somewhere because in a way you won...You "ran" a marathon before I biked any significant distance. You will be proud to know that Joe and I are biking the Tour de Force soon. It is 55 miles and the absolute longest distance I have every biked. I still think it is easier to run than bike! Laugh while I about die pedaling but get me through it, okay? You are still in our hearts and prayers as is your family.

We still miss you, spooner....

"The Badge"
He starts his shift each day
To respond to calls unknown.
He drives a marked patrol car.
A police officer he is known.
He's paid by the citizens' taxes
To make it safe on the streets.
But he usually has a second job
'Cause a waitress has his salary beat.
Now he doesn't know a holiday
'Cause he works all year round.
And when Thanksgiving and Christmas finally arrive
At his home he cannot be found.
He's cursed and assaulted often,
The one whos blood runs blue.
He seldom ever gets a thanks,
To some he's just a fool.
His friends are always other cops
'Cause people just don't understand
That underneath his badge and gun,
He's just another man.
He knows there might not be a tomorrow
In this world of drugs and crime.
And he gets so mad at the court system
'Cause the crooks don't get any time.
And each day when he leaves for work,
He prays to God above.
Please bring me home after my shift
So I can see the ones I love.
But tonight he stops a speeding car,
He's alone down this ole' highway.
It's just a little traffic infraction.
He does it everyday.
Well, he walks up to the driver's window,
And his badge is shining bright.
He asked the guy for a driver's license,
When a shot rang through the night.
Yes, the bullet hit its mark,
Striking the officer in the chest.
But the Department's budget didn't buy
Each officer a bullet-proof vest.
So he lay on the ground bleeding.
His blood wasn't blue - His blood was red.
And briefly he thought of his loved ones
'Cause in a moment the officer was dead.
In the news they told the story
Of how this officer had died.
And some who listened cared less,
But those who loved him cried.
Well, they buried him in uniform
With his badge pinned on his chest.
He even had his revolver,
He died doing his best.

I come to the ODMP often to remember my late fiancé Dennis. Everytime I come here it breaks my heart to know that yet another officer has fallen and that yet another family has to live their lives without the man they loved. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved Lieutenant Dahelm, especially to his wife. Know that you are not alone in the "journey" that you walk. Should you ever need anything please don't hesitate to contact me. The Davis Co. Sheriff's Office in Iowa will always know how to reach me. You will be in my thoughts.

From reading the reflections left for Corey, he sounds like he was a great man with a beautiful spirit. Those of you who knew him in life were so blessed to have been able to share in it. I hope that you will all continue to find a way to celebrate and remember Corey's life and the MAN that he was. Remember that Corey's life was about so much more than the way he died. Corey will continue to live on as long as we continue to remember him.

Lieutenant Dahelm, thank you for helping to make this world a little safer for us all. YOU will not be forgotten. Please continue to watch over all of us as only you can. If you happen to bump into my late fiancé Dennis up there give him a big hug for me and the kids. It's been four years but we still miss him terribly.

Wishing you brighter and better days,

Jocelyne :)

Corey,
Just wanted you to know that you are still missed down here on earth by all of us. You made such an impact on our lives and we are all better human beings and cops just for having known you. It has been months since you left us and as the other reflections state, it has not gotten any easier. Your absence is felt daily by all of us. Please continue to report to your watch nightly to look after us. This job has continued to become a more dangerous one with more of our LEO brothers and sisters dying daily. We know it is not in vain as the world is a better and safter place with law enforcement in it. God bless you and your family......

I again want to thank all of you for the support that you have given our family. As you know Corey's Killer has pled not guilty. We are getting ready for our first pretrial hearing on September 6, 2007. Please put us in your thoughts and prayers that justice will be served. Last night the street that Corey was struck on has been renamed Lt Corey Dahlem Blvd. It is kind of ironic that a Seminole will be forever remembered in the heart of gator country. Brandon and Katie are back in college and are taking one day at a time. Brandon continues to run Cross Country for the Unversity of South Florida and I am sure will make his father proud this season. Katie is keeping busy by being a youth counselor at church for middle schoolers.

It has been several months since you left us and slowly many of us are moving on, changing our views, thoughts, and outlook of this profession we have dedicated many years to.

Today 8/15/07 while getting ready to attend another Fallen Officers service in Broward, I learned of another officer who was gunned down while sitting in his vehicle over in Hillsborough County, FL. Times are changing that is for sure. We as LEO's are put more at risk these days then in the past years. The level of violence we are encountering is growing steadily while our numbers dwindle.

Corey look out for all of us who put on a uniform and try to keep us safe. We all miss you in our own ways.

Corey~ I walked by the Lt's office this morning and for a brief moment believed you would be in there, behind the computer, and would call out to me...then I caught myself and remembered. I miss you daily and your family is forever in my thoughts and prayers. They had a scholarship fundraiser in your name, funny--a UF scholarship (GO NOLES), but how nice that Urban knows the importance of honoring you!! We miss you, Corey. Waves of grief still come over me, what a great loss for your family and communities.... Sad some will never know how great a person you are. We remember and trust me that your name will be spoken and great stories will be told. I know you will continue to watch over us as we go out there and take care of the city!!

Hey Buddy,
Went to see you the other night at about 0230. While I was with you, I straightened up some of the plants that fell over after that rain we had. Suddenly, one of my guys was behind a robbery suspect just down the road and I had to run off to join in on the pursuit. As I was running off, I asked you to please watch out for all of us. You really did and after quite a long and eventful pursuit that ended on I-75, we got the bad guy with no one hurt. Man, you would have so enjoyed being in on that! But you were....You are an angel now watching out for all of us from above (keeping the same hours) and the other night proves it to us all. Thanks buddy!

LT,

I walked by the shift office the other day and poked my head in. No one was in there and its still hard to believe that you aren't with us anymore. Shaw made some more fliers that I think you would have gotten a good laugh at. We'll keep you in our thoughts while you look after us.

Corey,
I have thought long and hard about what to write to you but I can't say what I really feel because I still can't believe this has happened and the guy who lived across the street from me is no longer going to be there when I visit. I so enjoyed being your neighbor, friend and co-worker. I heard during your funeral that Norton Elem. called you the "Mom of the Year". Oh, how true that was. I don't know how many times I stood with you at the bus stop, talked to you about lunches with the kids, gymnastic and track tournaments and how to raise such wonderful children as you and Sally have done with Brandon and Katie. We had so much fun having neighborhood picnics, boarding up houses during hurricanes, taking care of the dogs, FSU/UF arguments between you and Ted and me, the lone Gator and just plain talking in the driveway. I wish I could be there to help your family in person but just know they are always in my thoughts and I will make sure to check on them from time to time. Your death was senseless but I know that God must have a better plan since he took you from all of us way too soon. My heart goes out to my brothers and sisters at GPD. You are all never far out of my thoughts. Please stay safe. To Sally, Brandon and Katie, I miss you and hope that in time your hearts will begin to heal. Ted and I are only a phone call away.
