"A Part of America Died"
Somebody killed a policeman today,
and a part of America died.
A piece of our country he swore to protect,
will be buried with him at his side.

The suspect that shot him will stand up in court,
with counsel demanding his rights, while a young widowed mother must spend many long, lonely nights.

The beat that he walked was a battle field too,
just as if he'd gone off to war.

Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
to his name they will add a gold star.
Yes, somebody killed a policeman today,
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
a cop put his life on the line.

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
and he stands at each new rookie's side.
He answered the call, of himself gave his all,
and a part of America died.

A friend in BLUE

I started out with Charlotte Police Department as a Police Explorer in 1988. In 1994 I started work with CMPD as a dispatcher and went on to become a police officer in SC in 1998. I later went on to work at MEDIC, upgraded to Paramedic and am back working with the police department on the Civil Emergency Unit.
I say all of that just to reinforce what I believe, once you start in law enforcement it is in you blood and you just can not get away from it. I had met officer Clark and could tell from the beginning that law enforcement was in his blood. I never had the pleasure of meeting Officer Shelton but am sure the same stands true for him. I truly believe that what makes it so hard to get away once you are there is because you become a part of a large family.
Just last week the CMPD dispatchers had a reunion with their family which was a very emotional time for me. Today, CMPD and the law enforcement community (along with fire fighters and EMS personnel) have lost two members of their family. This is a sad day but I hope also a day that we remember we all must do what we can to make sure a tragedy like this doesn't happen again.
My prayers go out to the parents, brothers & sisters, wives and children of the two officers.

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Officer Shelton and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Officer Shelton has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Officer Shelton, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Officer Shelton is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.
