Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Police Officer Lonnie Wells

The policeman stood and faced his God,which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, policeman. How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church have you been true?
The policeman squared his shoulders and said.
"No, I guess I ain't because those of us who carry a badge can't always be a Saint."
I've had to work most Sundays
and at times my talk is rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny that wasn't mine to keep...
though I worked a lot of overtime when the bills got to steep.
And I never passed a cry for help
though at times I shook with fear,
and sometimes, God forgive me, I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place among the people here.
They never wanted me around except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord, it needn't be so grand,
I never expected or had too much, but if you don't...I'll understand"
There was a silence all around the throne where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly for the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman.
You've borne you burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in Hell"

One Saturday morning, I was in the post office reading the newspaper. On the cover was a picture of Officer Wells. I thought of my only encouner with Officer Wells. I was teaching Summer School at the Berkeley Middle School when Officer Wells visited my classroom. I knew the role of a school resource officer because I met my husband when he was a resource officer in Orangeburg at the school I was teaching. I was so pleased to see the children's reaction to Officer Wells was one of great trust and respect. In my thoughts, his big grin on his face completely betrayed the stern warnings to behave he interspersed in his talk with the kids. He truly loved these kids and they loved him. As for that morning in the post office, I got my second glimpse into this officer's personality. An older black gentleman saw the picture on my newspaper and begin to tell of how Officer wells pulled his patrol car into his yard one day to ask how his gardening was going. Officer Wells had been waving at this man for the past two years as the man tended his garden. Finally, he stopped one day to visit with this retired gentleman farmer. The man offered Officer Wells some sweet potatoes and said he placed them in the floor board of officer Wells cruiser. He said that Officer Wells inquired as to the best way to cook his sweet potaotes and asked him if he could bake them in the microwave. This very traditional man told him the proper way to cook his sweet potatoes, and the proper way did not include a microwave. It was obvious to me that this officer was really trying to make a community connection with this gentleman. I thought then, what a nice story for Officer Wells's family to hear. I think his mom would be proud to know that her son took the time to get to know this man. I do not know this man's name, but I do recall he went on to tell me he had five daughters and I believe he said all five of his daughters are members of the armed forces.

I am saddened by the unexpected death of Officer Wells, known as Michael to me. We grew up in the same church and community in our then wholesome city of Quincy. We were all one happy family. His mom was one of our youth advisors and Sunday school teachers. I know he was welcomed into heaven by his Heavenly Father and his earthly father, Rev. Wells, with a smile just as wide as Michael's!
To his family, I say, hold your heads up he is our Hero!

I am the manager of a local drugstore that Officer Wells came into frequently. He was without a doubt one of the nicest Police Officers that I've know. When he would come in the store, there were usually children that would recognize him and he would smile that big old smile and tell them hello. No matter how busy he was, he always had time for children. You could see in their eyes the love and respect they had for this man. I am sorry that he will no longer be here for these children. We will miss him, his big smile and his laughter. May the good Lord above bless him and his family. May his children rise to the legacy of compassion and caring that this man did.
