Reflections for Auxiliary Police Officer Nicholas Todd Pekearo

RIP sir.

First Sergeant Thomas Webb, Retired
New York State Police

On that fateful night in Greenwich Village, two young men in the prime of their lives, wearing the uniform of New York City Auxiliary Police Officers, unarmed, except for a radio and nightstick, confronted pure evil, their heroism displayed in delaying a mad gunman’s shooting rampage in the crowded streets of Greenwich Village that night. A selfless act of heroism that saved many lives but cost them their own. As the 17th Anniversary of March 14th, 2007, comes up, many of those countless bystanders in the village that night along with the family, friends and colleagues of NYPD Auxiliary Police Officers Eugene Marshalik and Nicholas Pekearo will pause during a moment in their day to think…...think of two heroes of New York City……... two young men……who by fate that spring-like night served as their guardian angels in blue……

I remember that night, hearing it come over the radio of two MOS shot. My whole squad ran out of our office and responded to the 6th precinct to assist with the crime scene. It broke our hearts to see how you guys were hit, but we were all astounded at your bravery- unbelievable courage. Your killer was destroyed by return fire from the 6th precinct guys, I hope he is burning in hell.
I will always remember that night, and when I see your pictures- the first thing I think of is the bravery of you two young men.

On this day I continue to remember your sacrifice that you and your partner made 12 years ago. I once served as an Auxiliary Police Officer prior to becoming an HHC Police Officer and never ever forgot where I came from. I hope one day that the City of New York will one day change the status of NYPD Auxiliary and allow those the right to carry, issue summonses, make arrests, and mostly the right to carry before someone else gets killed.

On this those of us who once served as Auxiliary Officers still remember your sacrifice. We hope one day the State of New York will finally see that the 49 other states allow either Auxiliary or Reserve Officers give all Peace Officer status, the right to carry firearms, right to make arrests and issue summonses.

I was thinking of Nick tonight. We worked together at Crawford Doyle. One of our favorite things on downtime was to play "Surpentine!" from the the movie the In-Laws-- we were both movie nuts and talked about that a lot.

It's been 8 years since you were taken by a perpetrator. Gene you and your partner made a difference in making the City of New York a better place to live and to work in. I hope that one day the City and State of New York will do something to upgrade the Auxiliary Police. I have always said that Auxiliary Police Officers in New York should have the right to have armed "Peace Officer" status while on duty with all the same powers of arrests, summonses, and also to be paid if called into court. Rest in peace my brother you served very well and G-d should look over you and grant your family peace.
