Leave a Reflection

Reflections for Sergeant Howard J. Plouff

Rest in Peace Sgt. Plouff.
"Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall have no fear............."

Detective
Chicago Police Department

February 25, 2007

Sergeant Plouff,
The sacrifice you have made is one that no one should ever have to make. The reflections left for you, heartbreaking as they are, allow regular citizens a glimpse of who you were and what your life meant. A thank you will never be enough to express my gratitude for a job you chose.

My thoughts are with you, your family and friends and the Winston-Salem PD at this most difficult time.

The Policeman stood and faced his God,
which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining
just as brightly as his brass.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my church, have you been true?"

The Policeman squared his shoulders and
said, "No, Lord, I guess I ain't.
Because those who carry badges
can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times, my talk was rough...
and sometimes, I've been violent
because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny
that wasn't mine to keep,
though I worked a lot of overtime
when the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
though at times, I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around,
except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
Lord, it needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much.
But if you don't, I'll understand."

There was silence all around the throne where the saints often trod.
As the Policeman waited quietly
for the judgement of his God.

"Step forward now, Policeman.
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets.
You've done your time in hell."

Thank you, know your family & WSPD are in our thoughts and prayers. RIP Sgt.Plouff.

It is with a heavy heart that we pay our respects to Howard's family, friends and co-workers. We find ourselves lost for words as we remember all too well this feeling of loss. Although we moved to Colorado over 7 years ago, we still view WSPD as part of our extended family. Our thoughts are with the men and women of WSPD and their friends and family.

Howard, you will never be forgotten and will be missed. You were truly one of the good guys.

As I put on my uniform and gun Friday morning getting ready to go out to work I saw a local T.V. station with a news break of a Winston-Salem police officer being shot. The newscaster did not know the condition of the officer. I prayed then that God would take care of you. He had a greater plan for you. Rest in His care and love.I now pray that God will comfort Sgt. Plouffs family and brothers and sisters of the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Howard was one of my first FTO's when I first joined WSPD
over a decade ago. Although I'm no longer there, I have
never forgotten the fine officers who I had the honor to
serve with, none the least of which was Howard Plouff. His
easy-going style and New York wit always made it a pleasure
to be around him, both on and off the job. Rest easy Howard, we'll take it from here.
