Although I did not have the honor of knowing Detective Dressell, Our hearts go out to his loving Wife, Children and surviving family, as well as his compatriots in the safety forces from throughout our region. As I have come to know well over the years, when one falls all suffer the loss, for there is a bond unlike any other, between those few who put life at risk daily for the sake of the many.

Please accept our profound sympathy and shared heartbreak at the loss of Detective Dressell. His legacy will endure for years to come. God keep you close during the difficult times ahead, but know that you are not alone.

I HAD A GRANDFATHER
by Francine A. McLean

I had a Grandfather I’ve never known,
I never held his hand,
I never heard his voice,
I never saw him smile.

I’ve never looked into his eyes, ‘nor he into mine,
We’ve never taken a walk together,
Never played a game,
Never shared a secret.

I’ve never been able to ask his opinion,
Never heard him tell the stories of his youth,
Never seen his eyes light up with enthusiasm,
Never been able to ask his advice.

But as surely as I am alive, so then is he,
I see him in my face, in the eyes that are so much like his,
I feel his gentle touch in every kind gesture I have ever made,
His courage and his spirit in every challenge I have ever faced.

Long ago before I was ever even a thought,
He made a choice to protect and to serve,
And that choice took him too young and too soon,
But that choice also saved so many.

Yes, I had a Grandfather I have never known
But because I have never known him,
Because he gave his life,
I’d like to think that somewhere, someone else
Someone he ‘nor I will ever know…
Has their Grandfather’s hand to hold.

A POLICEMAN'S PRAYER
BROTHER WHEN YOU WEEP FOR ME REMEMBER THAT IT WAS MEANT TO BE.
LAY ME DOWN AND WHEN YOU LEAVE REMEMBER I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE...IN EVERY DARK AND DREARY ALLEY I'LL BE THERE AS YOU SLOWLY TREAD, ON EVERY STREET CORNER IN THE DRIVING SNOW I'LL HOLD YOUR COAT AND YOU WILL KNOW.
IN PLACES WHERE THE DEVIL IS AFRAID TO WALK...
AT DOORS WHERE YOU MEET RESISTANCE...
IN HOUSES WHERE CHILDREN HIDE...
YOU KNOW I'LL BE AT YOUR SIDE.
THE PLACE FROM WHICH I NOW RESPOND IS OVERSTAFFED WITH HEROES GONE...MEN WHO ANSWERED ONE LAST JOB AND DID IT WELL.
AS POLICEMEN WE UNDERSTAND THAT THIS IS A CARD DEALT IN OUR HAND...A CARD WE HOPE WE NEVER PLAY BUT WE HOLD IT THERE ANYWAY.
THE CARD IS SOMETHING WE IGNORE AS WE STAND ON THAT THIN BLUE LINE EVERY TOUR...FOR WE KNOW THAT WE ARE THE ONLY PRAYER FOR MANY OUT THERE.
SO REMEMBER, AS YOU WIPE YOUR TEARS, THE JOY I HAVE KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE YEARS...AS THE JOB I LOVED TO DO I PRAY THAT THIS THOUGHT WILL SEE YOU THROUGH.

As the wife of an officer, this is a time that comes with deep regret. Being married to an officer of the law certainly comes with intense concern, and because of the overwheling lack of respect for law enforcement officials in todays society, it also has it's ups and downs. For such a time as this... the down side weighs heavy on family, friends, fellow officers, and the community at large. Such devastation screams with an audibility that reaches law enforcement agencies worldwide while carrying with it a message that will burn in their hearts forever. To Detective Dressell (who my husband spoke well of), we say "Good night". Because of your undeniable dedication to your family, the department, and the citizens of Toledo, your memory lives on. The permanancy of "good bye" would be an injustice to a hero whose presence is still very much alive. To Mrs. Dressell, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. As the wife of a Toledo Police officer warm hugs of love embrace you from those who understand your life and support you during your time of loss. God be with you.

A Police Officers Prayer

LORD, I ask for courage
Courage to face and
conquer my own fears...
Courage to take me where others will not go...
I ask for strength
Strength of body to protect others,
and strength of spirit to lead others...
I ask for dedication
Dedication to my job, to do it well
Dedication to my community
to keep it safe...
And please, LORD, through it all,
be at my side...
