Danielle, I am very saddened to hear of your loss , I know we haven't been the closest over the years but, my heart goes out to you and your children right now. I have a very great respect for what Keith did and as your cousin, I am mourning with you, we are family.
I can't imagine how hard this is for you right now but, I remember something my Mom said to me once when I was hurting and it was that "God never gives you more than you can handle". I will be praying for you & the children.
Love,
Your Cousin

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.
"Step forward now, Policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To my Church have you been true?"
The policeman squared his shoulders and said,
"No, Lord I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
Can't always be a Saint.
I've had to work most Sundays,
And at times my work was rough,
and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.
But I never took a penny,
That wasn't mine to keep,
I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills just got too steep.
And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
And sometimes, God forgive me,
I've wept unmanly tears.
I know I don't deserve a place
among the people here.
They never wanted me around
Except to calm their fear.
If you've a place for me here, Lord
It needn't be so grand.
I never expected or had too much,
But if you don't, I'll understand."
There was silence all around the Throne
Where the Saints had often trod.
As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.
"Step forward now, policeman,
You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in Hell."

To the family and loved ones of Detective Keith Dressel and his fellow officers with the Toledo Police Department:
On this day of Keith's tragic death, I wanted to honor and remember him. Although I never had the privilege of meeting Keith, I feel as if I know him through the common bond of police brotherhood and having grown up in the Toledo area and same schools. His valor and courage will never be forgotten.
Having lost several friends, co-workers, and a partner to worthless thugs, I can only hope that his fellow officers and family will gain strength through the knowledge that they are not alone and the whole law enforcement profession is there to support them, if not in person at least in spirit.
I hope that God is holding his wife and son in the sweetest part of his heart and the most gentle part of his soul.
I am so sorry that Keith was robbed of his life at such a young age, but through his heroism and the profound sense of duty with which he lived his life, he made an immeasurable difference. May his spirit continue to soar and may his memory continue to inspire.
This reflection is sent with the utmost respect for the dedicated service Keith gave to his community and the citizens of Toledo, and the supreme sacrifice he and his family made on February 21, 2007.

Detective Dressel lost his life in my old neighborhood. I joined the Ohio State Highway Patrol in 1984 because I was tired of being afraid and I wanted to help others. My heartfelt prayers go out to his family, his parents, and everyone at the Toledo Police department. You also have the support or every state trooper in Ohio.

“REMEMBER ME”
Law enforcement officers are, indeed, a special breed of people. Ask anyone on the street and they will tell you that they would not have our jobs for anything in the world. It takes something special to do what we do and at the same time be able to even contemplate retirement. We try to be optimists. Unfortunately, there are a few of us who will never make that date with retirement. By the very nature of our job, we are at risk everyday of losing our lives, either at the hand of some deranged individual or in some other situation that we, by virtue of our occupation, may be unable to avoid. Some people have recognized the hazardous duties we involve ourselves in, the risks we take, and the pride we take in accomplishing that job. There is National Law Enforcement Week, dedicated to us who gladly accept the responsibility of protecting the citizens in our respective jurisdictions. National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Day is dedicated to those who gave their lives in the line of duty. These are but two examples of remembrances specifically for law enforcement personnel. Remembrances that come but once a year. We should remind fellow officers of another type of remembrance, one that will last a lifetime. Sooner or later, a doctor will pronounce us dead. It is inevitable. Regardless of whatever happens, death is the end we will all have to face.

As the wife of a Toledo area police officer, my heart goes out to the wife of Det. Dressel and his children. I know the fear she faced every day, waiting for her husband to come home safely and hoping she would never receive that visit that we all dreaded and hope would never come. May God watch over them and bless them and may Det. Dressel rest in peace. We can't thank him enough for his service and the sacrifice he made to keep all of us safe. God has a special place for him in Heaven, may he rest in peace until we join him in the Kingdom.
