Reflections for Detective Keith Dressel

We offer our heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Detective Dressel and we honor his distinguished service to the cause of justice and peace. Sadly, our nation has lost one of its finest citizens, a community has lost a friend and protector, and a family has lost an example of character and courage who they will love and respect forever. Today, because of the sacrifice Detective Dressel has made, the house of freedom is stronger, sturdier, and more secure.

To the family and friends of Detective Dressel, I would like you to know that a lot of people pray for you, and my hope is that their prayers will give you the strength necessary to move on. Just as you were always with him when he walked the beat or patrolled the streets, know that he will always be with you - wherever you may be. In the days to follow, may you be strengthened by the fact that Detective Dressel is a man distinguished by exceptional courage and will always be admired for his brave deeds and noble qualities. You, your family and your sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Keith,

You will always be known to us as a hero. There is nothing worse than having a fellow brother in blue taken from us in the hands of another and we will forever grieve your loss. You will always be in the back of our minds as we patrol the streets as you now look over us. God bless you and the officers of the Toledo Police Department.

All of us at work are in a state of shock. We cannot believe Keith was taken from us in this tragic way. But as sad as we are, I know Keith would want all of us to remember the good times, which were many. My last memory of Keith was at our union meeting Tuesday night, just six hours prior to Keith's death. There was some serious talk taking place regarding police cars, manpower, residency requirements, and lay-offs (all which seem pretty trivial now). All the sudden a cell phone rings. Not just a ring, ring, ring, but the Michigan Fight Song ring (which was annoying to this Ohio State fan). All eyes focused on the guy with the blue knit hat with a big, yellow "M" on the front. Yep, it was Keith, and with what my grandmother would call, "That shit-eatin' grin". I just smiled and thought to myself, that's Keith. Keith always had that shit-eatin' grin whenever I saw him. That was Keith. I always thought he looked liked the happiest guy in the world, no matter what he was doing at work. Keith is a hero and will never be forgotten. During our sad times, think of the good times we had with Keith. I guarantee you'll smile. Rest in peace, brother.

As a native Ohioan, Williams County and having last lived in Toledo before I came here....I send my condolences and best wishes. It seems that the last 3 have really touched me lately as we had our own loss in our county within the past month, my brother lost an officer in Glendale, AZ and now one from home.
My prayers are with the family.

There are no words that can ease the pain that your family and co-workers are going through. I hope that your family holds some comfort from knowing that you were doing what you love and believe in. I thank you, because I know that you were out there on the front lines for our familes. I honor your commitment to the security of this great nation.
God holds a special place in heaven for HERO's like you that place themselves between the good and evil in this world.
Look down on your family, co-workers, and friends and wrap your wings of "blue" around them and keep them safe, and ask God to hold them dear to his heart.

+ Rest Now My Brother, For Your Watch Has Ended +

I never dreamed it would be me
My name for all eternity
Recorded here at this hallowed place
Alas, my name, no more my face

"In the line of duty" I hear them say
My family now the price will pay
My folded flag stained with their tears
We only had those few short years

The badge no longer on my chest
I sleep now in eternal rest
My sword I pass to those behind
And pray they keep this thought in mind

I never dreamed it would be me
And with heavy heart and bended knee
I ask for all here from the past
Dear God, let my name be the last
(Author unknown)

+God bless all the men and women in blue.+

Keith,
You were the best partner anyone could ask for and I want to thank you because your knowledge and dedication made me a better officer. You took me under your wing and showed me the way. Always quick with a joke or just a little word of harassment, meant in the best way possible. I truly enjoyed being around you. You were genuine. There will never be another like you and I feel that my life was enriched having known you. Rest in peace my friend, my hero. Heaven has a new protector. "HEROES LIVE FOREVER"

Keith,
I remember the last time I saw you a few weeks ago at Westfield Mall. You were with the kids and I told you I was going to push you in the fountain to clean you up a little. You looked back over your shoulder and smiled and stated, "Don't, I can't swim." That was the last time I saw you or spoke to you. When my phone rang at 0519 on Feb 21, 2007, I new something bad had happened, but I had no idea it was this tragic. I find it hard to concentrate and every moment alone, my mind drifts to thoughts of you and your family. I had the EXTREME HONOR of being assigned to your house on 2-22-07 during my shift and having the privilege to speaking with your family in depth. It gave me a chance to express my true feelings to those that mattered most and also an opportunity to learn a lot about you in a short period of time. I found out we were alike in the aspect that we LOVE to laugh and make those around us laugh. I don't know if our relationship could have been classified as "friends", but it is without a doubt you are my "BROTHER". I LOVE YOU and THANK YOU FOR GIVING YOUR ALL! And at this moment I truly wish you were here to make me laugh. To Danielle and the entire Dressel Family, loved ones, friends, co-workers and peers around the country, remember; COURAGE isn't having the STRENGTH to go on, but going on when you don't have the STRENGTH!
GOD BLESS YOU KEITH, AND I PRAY THAT JUSTICE IS SERVED.
P.S. KEEP THEM LAUGHING UNTIL I GET THERE.

Patrol Officer Andre' L. Cowell Sr.
